Download of the Day Mufin Music Player

Mufin used to be a service that has a powerful music recommendation engine which allows you to generate playlists which contain similar music. The service pulls music from your library and then does a little abra-cadabra and out comes a playlist similar to any song you have in your library.

Now they have upgraded their service by launching a native music player called, unsurprisingly, the Mufin Music Player that comes automatically integrated with this awesome feature. The service has been compared to Apple’s Genius music-matching technology but with a few key differences.

Mufin

The Apple Genius is a service introduced in iTunes 8, which scans your library and matches music according to an aggregate data of other people’s listening habits. So, say there are a lot of people who put Britney Spears music together with Carrie Underwood; if you were to ask Genius to suggest some music to go with your Britney Spears collection, Carrie Underwood will come up first.

Dropclock Screensaver

I am not a huge fan of screensavers because I prefer to turn my computer off or go into hibernation when I am not using it… saves electricity bill. Haha. The only purpose of screensavers in my opinion is for the fun of it if it’s really a cool one.

Now, the Dropclock Screensaver has to be one of the coolest one we have ever seen! It’s an asthetically intriguing motion clock screensaver. Every minute of real time is numeriaclly expressed with heavy helvetica dropping into water in super slow motion. OK, now see this screensaver in action…

Super cool, isn’t it? Dropclock is a huge screensaver for free download at close to 150MB. It’s available for Windows XP, Windows Vista with .net framework 1.1 and MAC OSX 10.33 – 10.5. Oh, before I forgot, the free download is a trial version, and the full version cost US$15 only. Don’t let this upset you… go download and try!

Free software download Revo Uninstaller

Today we present to you a wonderful app called Revo Uninstaller. You may or may not have heard of it before, but it is a freeware portable application, which obsoletes even the Windows built-in uninstall manager!

Revo Uninstaller

The uninstall manager in Windows is notoriously useless. All it does is gather a link of your installed application’s own uninstaller. Sometimes it even screws up and gives you an error stating the application has no uninstaller. It is also notoriously useless at failing to completely remove installed applications, and you have to use things like a registry cleaner to clean up the mess.

Advertising in Computer Games

In-game advertising, for lack of a better word, remains the Holy Grail to countless advertising agencies eager to find a way to reach gamers.

Why gamers? It seems that gamers represent a highly valued demographic, that of 13-39 year old males.

Ever since computer games evolved from green screen pixels into a billion dollar industry, agencies have been trying to bombard gamers with ads in hope that sales would pour in. But what actually happened was a series of failures, from modest mistakes to downright corny debacles.

Order pizza while playing

My favorite example would be ordering a Pizza Hut pizza through an in-game command in Everquest II. Anyone remember this?

In 2005, Sony announced that Everquest II players could order their pizzas through an in-game command by typing /pizza, which would open an online menu. The pizza would be delivered normally, in the real world of course.

Microsoft releases Sidewinder X8 mouse and X6 gaming keyboard

It has only been March 2009 but Microsoft has already released their flagship Sidewinder series of desktop accessories. The Sidewinder X8 is the latest mouse in the series and the X6 is the latest keyboard. If the design is any indication, they are going to blow the competition clear out of the water.

Microsoft X8 mouse

First off, the X8 Gaming Mouse is an expensive behemoth of a mouse priced at $US99, and for that you get a mouse that uses Bluetrack technology (only two other mouse have it so far), which is a newfangled way of saying it uses some nifty blue-colored LEDs over traditional red LED or laser tracking of older mice. The advantages? An impressive 4000dpi and up to 13,000 frames-per-second capture speed gives you far superior tracking technology for lightning-fast actions and fine control, although to be honest I don’t think there is any benefits for mouse to run above 3000dpi. Too much is simply an overkill. 🙂

Eye-Fi 4GB Explore Video and Share Video cards

Eye-Fi devices are pretty interesting. For those who don’t know, they have previously released a 2GB SD-card which is able to magically hook to nearby wireless spots and upload photos on the card directly to online photo hosting sites such as Flickr.

Eye Fi

Of course, it’s not magic but a little bit of techno wizardry. The Eye-Fi card is simply a small flash module (like the microSD) squeezed together with a very very small Wi-Fi module and then packaged into the form factor of an SD-card.

You simply put it into any gadgets which can accept an SD-card and it sees the Eye-Fi as just a regular card that has 4GB of capacity. The magic happens when the Wi-Fi module detects a nearby wireless network and logs on, effectively gaining access to the Internet. Then, depending on how you set it up, it will automatically upload photos that you have taken on the SD-card on your favorite photo-sharing website.

An Ad for Gamers

Gillette is such a n00b. Gillette, ever the enterprising company, decided to introduce a razor, the Gillette Fusion Power Gamer Razor, for, of all demographics, GAMERS.

Gillette Razor Gamer ad

Good, Bad idea, or downright Ugly marketing strategy? Was that tumbleweed blowing by? Oh no, that was a ball of shaving cream.

Either way, the razor, which boasts of delivering its most comfortable shave, is now available, much to the chagrin of most gamers who even bother to notice it.

Latest Apple updates

Every now and again, Apple likes to update their product lineup and this has happened rather consistently in 12-month intervals. However, they have been pretty busy lately with the commercial success of the iPhone and iPod Touch that left their desktop products languishing as other computer manufacturers push out newer products.

iMac

Well, Apple has finally released an update to almost all their product family and the change left almost no Apple product untouched, although most of the changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary.

First, we saw some new iMacs, which look as beautiful as ever with the all-in-one approach that integrates the CPU components directly into the body of the screen, giving it an almost cable-free look perfect for any office desk. The entry model has a 20-inch screen while the more expensive models all pack a humongous 24-inch flat screen. They have also updated the graphics card to 9400M and GT 120, depending on your price range.

Are Asian Gamers No Good?

Fancy playing Tiger Woods in a head-to-head match-up in his own video game?

Tiger Woods

Steve Ward of Nhill Australia reckons it is better than being crowned Gaming Champion in Gillette-EA Sports Champions of Gaming Tournament 2009.

But as I read about the EA tournament, what struck me was that there was not a single Asian winner. Even the Asia-Pacific category was dominated entirely by Australians.

I am not racist, but it was just odd that a continent with at least half the world’s population could not even have a single winner in a gaming tournament.

Why is it odd?
