Top 100 alternative search engines other than Google

I believe almost all of the time you use Google to search for anything you would like to find on the Internet. In fact, Google is used by millions of people every day in more than 80 languages, it has expanded beyond just searches to encompass shopping, news, blogs and even a service that blocks pop-up ads (the Google toolbar).

Now Google is a noun, adjective and verb!

But, have you ever wondered what are the other search engines on the Internet? Of course there are the more widely used such as Yahoo, MSN and Ask.com. Can you name me a few more?

Haha, I bet you can’t name more than 10 search engines, no worries, Charles S. Knight, SEO has already compiled a handy list of the top 100 alternative search engines on Read/Write Web.

ChaCha

What about give ChaCha a try today? ChaCha is a human-powered search engine as it employs people to help users sift through the results. This is done using a familiar chat interface on the site. Basically, you chat with the human guide on what you are trying to look for, and the human will answer your questions and guide you! Isn’t this great! My test shows that it’s a little slow as we need to wait for the response from the guide. However, chating with the guide was so much fun that I almost forgot what I went there for! 🙂

Save GIF Animations in Outlook, not as BMP files

It’s really frustating if you would like to save a really nice gif animation file in an email you received in Microsoft Outlook. This is simply because Microsoft Outlook does not allow you to save gif animations within an email, though I think Outlook Express does. I think Outlook has this limitation most likely due to security concerns since gif animation might be a virus or some harmful scripts in diguise.

Anyway, is there a way you can force Outlook to save an animation as a gif animation and not as a BMP graphic?

Microsoft Outlook

Of course, there is a way. The easiest layman way is just to forward the email containing the animations to yourself again, exit Outlook and then start Outlook Express and receive the email with the animation in Outlook Express. Or forward it to a web-based email account such as your Yahoo or Gmail account and you can certainly save your gif animation files from these accounts.

This sounds good, but is there a better way? Of course, if you do not mind playing around with a few advanced settings. Microsoft guru Robert Sparnaaij has made a step-by-step guide at his How-to-Outlook site: Save Embedded Pictures in Their Original Format.

Linux never looked so good!

When I looked at my blog, it looked so plain and boring. Yes, I know that. So, I looked into my hard drive to see if I can find something to brighten up the site, and baby look what I have found!

Hide your IP Address while surfing

When you connect to the Internet, your IP address is your identity and it’s exposed to the world to see. Of course this is not a problem under normal circumstances, but can be misused by hackers and people with bad intention because your IP address actually tells a lot about yourself. Don’t believe me? Check your IP address now and I will show you where you are from!

IP Address

Your privacy is at high risk! Want to hide your IP Address while surfing?

There are a few ways to hide your IP so that you can surf the Internet anonymously.

  • If you are using Mozilla Firefox, then you have to check out SwitchProxy which lets you manage and switch between multiple proxy configurations quickly and effortlessly. You can also use it as an anonymizer to protect your computer from prying eyes.
  • However, if all you wanted is just to surf anonymously and do not intend to install any firefox add-on, then Mister Privacy might be a good choice. Basically, they offer two options and the free option is enough to get started. The free option does block thousands of harmful threats and malicious scripts, and of course hides your IP address!

The above are two of the best and easiest ways to surf anonymously. If you are more adventurous and do not mind a little technical stuff, you can change the proxy settings directly within your Internet browser. Public Proxy Servers has a hugh list of free proxy servers all around the world which you can use.

Happy surfing and hide your IP when you need to. 🙂

New technology news and tips site

Welcome to Kongtechnology.com, a fresh and new technology blog.

Now, you may ask me why I scrapped the previos website, and started a fresh one… Well, the answer is pretty simple, I get bored with the look of the previous website and find it difficult to write tutorials which the previous website is all about, so thought of writing a tips blog instead. This should be much simpler except that I need to update myself with the latest happenings in the world of Internet!

Also, I get really jealous with LiewCF’s technology blog. Guess he is earning more by blogging compared to my 9 to 5 job… I wanna become the next most profitable blog in Malaysia! Hahaha…
