Best Portable Wi-Fi Device

Today we are going to take a look at two of the available portable Wi-Fi browsing devices out there and see which is better and worthy of your attention and money.

iPod Touch

This is a device that needs no introduction. It’s small, slim, sexy and packed with enough games and features to make it one of the most desired mobile devices next to the iPhone. However, while it can be good at doing many things, such as playing games, listening to great music, etc, it still lacks in certain areas especially when compared to other portable WiFi devices.

iPod Touch 2

Most people who get the Touch would probably want to jailbreak it first, to break Apple’s evil control of the device and return full functionality to it. There are many merits to doing a jailbreak, such as enabling various features that Apple has disallowed such as copy & paste and changing themes.

The small size and sheer thinness makes it virtually unnoticeable when slipped into your jeans pockets, although the shiny silver back attracts scratches like nobody’s business. You’d think that in a battle between steel and fabric, steel would win. You’d be wrong in this case. Do invest in a quality protective film such as the Invisible Shield or Bodyguardz.

What is Bookmarklets and how do I use it?

Today we are going to learn all there is to know about what a Bookmarklet is, how to use them and some popular and interesting bookmarkets to get you started.

A bookmarklet is basically a short snippet of Javascript code, which is saved in the form of a bookmark. The difference between a bookmarklet and a regular bookmark is that a bookmark will direct you to a site which you’ve bookmarked in the past, while clicking on a bookmarklet will run whatever the Javascript code is programmed to do.

Firefox 3

Usually the bookmarklet provides some very nice functions which can be pretty complicated to explain in one sentence, so I won’t and will leave it for the next section. Suffice to say that a bookmarklet can in many cases be used as a substitute for extensions for browsers like Firefox.

Overclocking your Mouse

If you think that overclocking is limited to hardware such as processors, memory and graphics card, then you are in for a new class of overclock-able hardware: the humble mouse!

3D mouse

Ever since Razer started the gaming mouse market, we have seen a flood of these so-called gaming-grade mice that comes with all sorts of improvements and features. Some of them are useful, such as macro programming for your mouse to execute a series of commands with a click of a button (now you know how you got pwned so quickly!) and increased sensitivity while others are less so, such as adjustable weight control for your mouse.

One of the more important things to come out of this is something called USB polling. By default, your USB port works at 125MHz, so your mouse reports the pointer position 125 times a second. Razer allowed 500MHz or even up to 1000MHz of polling rate, increasing the accuracy of your pointer because it is being updated much more quickly per second.

Movie Making Technology

Movie making technology has drastically improved and grown more complex since the first movie was made around 100 years ago. From its humble beginnings as moving photographs, it has evolved into a tantalizing experience that thrills our senses and stimulates our minds.

Charlie Chaplin

In the early days, movies were rudimentary and short, lasting no more than a couple of minutes. One peculiar thing about these movies was that they were all silent. Though inventors tried to incorporate synchronous sound with the pictures, no practical method was devised till the late 1920s. But that did not stop these silent movies and their stars from becoming timeless classics.

Recognize him? Yes, that’s Charlie Chaplin, one of the most well known comedians of all time.

iPod Touch 2 Jailbroken and Free

After about six months since its release, the jailbreak community celebrates another milestone in the fight against Apple tyranny by releasing the first jailbreak solution for the newest iPod Touch, also known as the Touch 2.

The saga of the Touch 2’s jailbreak journey is long and exciting. When Apple first announced the device, fans were happy to pick it up because the features, such as volume control, integrated speakers and a nicer and sleeker form-factor beats the older Touch by a comfortable margin. But it wasn’t long before people realized the new Touch cannot be jailbroken using existing techniques developed for the iPhone and the original Touch.

iPod Touch 2

The reason is that Apple added some new circuits and changed some of the IC, thus fixing the older loophole that allowed jailbreak to be possible. Ever since then, the race is on by developers chr0nic and the iPhone Dev Team to find a new way to break the system.

It took a few months before the first jailbreak, also called Red Sn0w, was released by the iPhone Dev Team. It exploits some features of the new Touch chips, but was limited due to the fact that it needs to be connected to the computer and have some special commands sent to the iPod before it will boot. Thus, anytime the device restarts or hangs, you cannot boot it until you find a computer and plug it in. It is also known as the tethered jailbreak.

Apple iPhone OS 3.0 Sneak Peek

The next major upgrade to Apple’s mobile Mac OSX, also called the iPhone OS 3.0 is just around the corner, and Apple has recently released a sneak peek video of all the tasty new stuff that’s going to be made available. The presentation is for developers though, so there is more emphasis on technical info.

The new functions are split into three major categories and we will take a look at each.

iPhone OS 3.0

Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth is now possible for gaming and info-swapping, which is very useful because you and your friend no longer need to be connected to the same WiFi hotspot in order to do those things. Mobile phones such as the Ngage from Nokia has this feature for a long time now, and Apple shows they are being serious in pushing the iPhone and iPod Touch as a mobile gaming device.

Paid apps can now have subscription-based fees as well as optional paid content, which is a major boon for one game in mind: Tapulous’ Tap Tap games. For years they have offered their music for free, as they were not allowed to charge for paid content. With this system, expect to see this app skyrocket with more exclusive tracks and new, premium music! Of course this new model will encourage more creative games and things like download-able levels, etc.
