Twitter The Social Media Frenzy

Twitter has recently, emerged as one of the hottest trend in social media. People are literally talking about it all over the world and news media; even celebrities are joining Twitter. Now what’s the deal with Ashton Kutcher beating CNN in twitter followers’ count, and Oprah tweeting from her talk show? What is so special about this blue bird that catches everybody’s attention all of a sudden?

Today, we’ll be taking a little sneak peak at this Twitter application.

What is Twitter?

Twitter is a microblogging platform that allows people to share “what are you doing?” to their network of followers. Think about it as the combination of blogging & instant messaging, but with fewer characters (140 per posting) & wider crowds.

What are you doing?

Ok, I get the idea, then how do I start?

Start by signing up, picking yourself a username, filling up the profile page and you’re good to go. You could start with your first tweet, but be pre-warned, not everyone is interested in “I’m having lunch now” all the time. Be conversational and people will appreciate it.

NVIDIA Ion Goes Official

If you have been following the NVIDIA Ion story, you should know by now the long and challenging history faced by this diminutive platform as it faced down rivals from Intel and their criticisms about the viability of such a platform. There is even a rumor that the exasperated NVIDIA might be approaching and buying over VIA in order to use the VIA Nano in place of Intel Atom processors.

Nvidia

Whatever the reasons might be, it is now official:

The NVIDIA Ion has launched and will be shipping worldwide come second quarter of 2009!

This release will no doubt bring many good tidings to people like me who have always shunned the “ultraportable” market Atom-based computers because the performance on these were horrible and for the same amount of money, you could get some other PC which isn’t running on Atom, although perhaps it won’t be as compact.

Next generation iPhone and iPod Touch coming real soon

Based on some connect-the-dots theory, Apple might be gearing up to launch a next-gen iPhone/iPod Touch in the not-too-distant future thanks to some industry data on flash memory chips.

Last year, around the same time now, Apple placed an order for about 50 million 8GB NAND flash memory chips and many people speculated that the iPhone 3G and updated iPod Touch will be launched, which, with the benefit of hindsight turned out to be true.

Now they are repeating the exact same thing this year, except they have doubled the order to 100 million such memory chips, suggesting perhaps the same pattern?

Chartbeat Real Time tracking better than Google Analytics

Bloggers and webmasters (now that’s a term that I haven’t heard in a while) have long used Google Analytics to provide information on their website such as who’s visiting, where do they come from, how long did they spend on the site, and other miscellaneous info that is important to allow you to tweak your website and capture the audience.

Google Analytics

If you’re really serious about monetizing your blog, Charbeat is hard to beat in terms of offering far superior services to Google Analytics. In Google Analytics, all the results are delayed 24 hours, although you can change the settings for more frequent update but the information is still delayed by 2 to 4 hours, and some information might not be available or accurate until the next day when Google has properly crunched through the data. This has led to some services try to outdo Google by offering the same services but at real-time speed!

Ultra Flat Speaker Technology

I came across this cool piece of news the other day. Researchers at the Warwick Audio Technologies, part of the Warwick University have developed what can only be described as the world’s thinnest speaker technology; at 0.25mm, that’s hard to beat.

They are calling it the Flat, Flexible Loudspeaker (FFL) and it started life off as two tinfoil separated by an insulating material, which vibrates when electrical current is applied producing sound. Since then, it has gone through several iterations and is now almost ready for mass production.

Ultra flat speaker

Traditionally, speakers function by vibrating a membrane attached to a magnet. The vibrations are controlled by an electromagnet, which is in turn controlled by an electrical current. With the FFL, the whole surface can be made to vibrate in sync, turning it into a piston resonator, producing highly directive sound that is also coherent due to all the waves being in sync.

MSI X340 challenges Macbook Air

The Macbook Air has inspired many geeks out there with its sleek profile, and even now it’s still a wonder to look at. It’s just so thin!

Well since then a few companies have tried to rival the Air in terms of engineering, and the latest is MSI with their X320 and X340, which is just as thin as the Macbook Air, but also much, cheaper.

MSI X340

However, for the price, the X320 comes with the highly undesirable Intel Atom, which at 1.6GHz is still quite pathetic and can’t run anything other than Windows XP and Linux well. The X340 tries to improve on this by bumping the processor to the recently announced Intel CULV designed to give better performance than the Atom but at a slightly reduced battery life (hey, that’s obeying the laws of physics right there!).
