Cannot send out emails in Outlook?

If you found yourself suddenly couldn’t send out emails from Outlook or any of your email clients today, don’t panic. Thanks to Tmnet for blocking port 25 for all out going emails.

Blocked

What is ridiculous is Tmnet did this without any prior notice. I receive no notification from them other than lots of junk mails although I have been using Tmnet dial-up and Streamyx for so many years… My friend however did receive an email notification from them today. Yes, he received it today only when the block is in effect! If my friend didn’t forward the email he received from Tmnet, I would for sure have called up my web hosting company and started an argument. Lucky I didn’t do that and lucky my friend forwarded the notice from Tmnet to me!

Following is an excerpt from the email:

… many anti-spam organizations have blacklisted a large number of IP addresses from TM’s network. Due to this many customers have been unable to send emails from their mail server to companies who might be using database from the abovementioned anti-spam organizations.

These spamming activities by a small group have affected a large number of our customers, regardless of the nature of their Internet usage.

Therefore, TM is taking immediate action to address this issue. Effective 3 December 2007, TM will block OUTBOUND Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) traffic or port 25 for all out going e-mails from dynamic IP addresses. Only Outbound SMTP traffic from smtp.streamyx.com and smtp.tm.net.my will be allowed. …

With this implementation, we will not be able to send out emails if our dynamic IP address falls within the affected IP address range. We are thus forced to use Tmnet’s open relay server, at least until our web hosting provider configures an alternative SMTP port.

I own an Apple iPhone

What is the latest and hottest gadget in Malaysia? iPod? Microsoft Zune? No,… I don’t think so. I think it has to be Apple iPhone. Let me do a very quick and simple review of the Apple iPhone which I merely owned for 30 minutes. Haha, actually it belongs to my colleague and he only loaned me for 30 minutes to play with… but it’s enough to fall in love with this futuristic phone!

iPhone

Overall, I would say the phone is not perfect. Nothing is. But it’s certainly far ahead of it’s competitors in many areas. Let me detail them below.

Wish to appear on top position in Google?

You wish to appear on the top position in Google? That’s the magic question asked in an email from Exabytes (Malaysia’s largest web hosting company) which I received this morning. As usual their emails, or rather newsletters are nicely designed, but what caught my attention was the prove they show that they can make you top position in Google.

Go to Google.com.my and search for they keyword “hosting” and you can see that their website is in the number 1 position.

AdWords

This is really good… although I am not sure how much you need to pay to Google AdWords in order to be number 1 on the keyword “hosting”. I guess it’s not cheap… considering there are so many web hosting companies in Malaysia bidding for that keyword.

What an amazing LAN party!

A friend of mine forwarded this large scale LAN party picture to me. Look at the number of computers… the hall must be damn warm since some participants were seen half naked! Haha…

LAN party

If you have no idea what’s a LAN party… let’s check what Wikipedia has to say:

A LAN party is a temporary, sometimes spontaneous, gathering of people together with their computers, which they network together primarily for the purpose of playing multi-player games. These local area networks (LANs) come in various sizes, from very small (two people) to very large (more than a few thousands people).

Small parties can form spontaneously, but large ones usually require a fair amount of planning and preparation on the part of the organizer.

Can’t imagine how powerful is this hugh LAN… several times more powerful than the world’s most powerful supercomputer I guess!

Have you attended any LAN party in Malaysia? Well, maybe not, Malaysia is only good for biggest flag, or biggest roti canai, but never large scale LAN parties like this… maybe a party of 5 computers in a cyber cafe only, unless we have something like this…

Hot LAN party

Wow… with this installed, I would expect a hugh turn out! 🙂

Timothy Tiah nominated Businessweek Asia’s Best Young Entrepreneur

Believe it or not, both founders of Nuffnang, Timothy Tiah and Cheo Ming Shen are in the nomination list of this year’s Businessweek Asia’s Best Young Entrepreneurs award! Timothy is not only the youngest among the 25 finalist, he’s also the only Malaysian there. He’s 23 only.

Timothy Tiah

There, that’s Timothy Tiah, aka Boss Stewie! Girls, he’s still available… 🙂 It’s not usual for me to put a big portrait photo on my blog, but I do it now because I hope by doing this he will send some big paying advertisers to my blog… haha, I want to make big money online also!

You have seen Facebook, but what about Hatebook?

I know you have seen and used Facebook, but probably you are now bored with it. But have you seen Hatebook? Hatebook is a parody of social networking site, Facebook that looks and functions exactly the same, except with an evil twist. It lets you express your anger and rage.

Hatebook

Hatebook has many features that are similar with Facebook, and the interface is almost an exact copy only that it’s a fiery red evil theme. Hatebook is a place for you to be anti social and conniving.

After you sign up with them, you will be greeted with the following evil message:

Hello Sucker! Welcome to Hatebook! Your registration to the Evil Empire was successful. Feel free to pimp your hate profile.

In your profile, you list the things that you hate, and network with other evil people to create lies. You can even receive hate points. You also have the ability to upload photos and create hate albums and videos of those people whom you hate!

Do check out my Hatebook profile… I have added Liucf there! Wahahaha…

Some people are really creative. They see the popularity of Facebook and quickly created something similar, only name it Hatebook!

Aztech DSL phone splitter

If you have bad Streamyx connection, such as intermittent or frequent disconnection, one of the likely cause could be a faulty splitter. Although I agree that 90% of the time it’s due to problem at Streamyx side. Anyway, to improve Streamyx’s speed and stability, it’s important to get a good phone splitter. The one from Aztech is of good quality and affordable at the same time.

DSL phone splitter

I bought this from IT Planet, one of the only few IT stores in Puchong. This store is located in Tesco Puchong. Retails for RM15, but I managed to bargain to RM10.

I have a couple of telephone sockets at home and the one in the study room is already installed with a phone splitter because that’s the one connected to the Streamyx line. But the other one in the living room which is connected to the phone is problematic when I am online… Whenever someone uses the phone, I may get disconnected from Streamyx, and static and dialing tonnes could be heard on the phone too.
