Will Malaysia block YouTube website?

News came in yesterday that Pakistan has blocked access to the popular video sharing website, YouTube because of objectionable video content.

YouTube videos

Reports said the content deemed offensive to Islam which resulted in the ban, included Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, and a trailer for a forthcoming film by Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders, which portrays Islam in a negative light.

A blogger from Lahore, Pakistan, Shafiq Rehman however thinks the ban is more “political” than “cultural”:

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority issued a notice today to all ISPs in Pakistan to block few URLs which were related to election rigging. Since Pakistani service providers didnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt have proper infrastructure to block individual URLs, they blocked the whole domain.

Best Pacman game ever

Wow, I absolutely must salute to the creator of this game! It’s so genius of him to create this all time favorite arcade game Pacman, but with a twist.

Anti Pacman

The Anti-Pacman game is in contrary to Pacman, instead of you being the good guy, now you play the ghosts! Your goal is to catch Pacman before he eats all the dots. Use the arrow keys to move the active ghost around and press the number keys 1-2-3-4 to switch between the four ghosts. Unlike the original Pacman game, here a ghost dies forever if it’s eaten by Pacman, so be sure to take care of your ghosts.

MYNIC website and whois down on 1st March 2008

Just want to share with you that you will not be able to do Malaysia country level domain name whois queries on 1st March 2008 because Mynic will be conducting planned maintenance works on that day.

Mynic

Received the following email a few moments ago:

Please be informed that MYNIC will be conducting planned maintenance works as below:

Date: 1st March 2007
Time: 08:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Please note that the MYNIC website and Whois service will be not available during the maintenance time. However, please note that all domain names registered with MYNIC will not be affected by this maintenance work.

Please do not hesitate to e-mail domreg@mynic.net.my or call us at
03-89917272 if you have any query at all.

Did you notice the date? 2007! What a mistake to make here… But a check on Mynic’s website on this scheduled maintenance confirms it’s a mistake because on their website they have corrected it to 1st March 2008.

Not sure if you can still submit domain name registrations on that day?

Nuffnang went down due to server hard disk crash

What a surprise. Nuffnang’s website went down today due to a hard disk failure. I don’t usually check Nuffnang’s website everyday so I have no idea what time the hard disk failure occurred, but the email from Timothy Tiah came in at about 3pm. According to the email, the hard disk crashed at about 12pm today but the good news is that they had backed up all the data on the server, so there is no worry that your money in your account would be lost!

Nuffnang

This came just a few months after Advertlets.com (Nuffnang’s direct competitor) went down for many days due to a silly reason: they forgot to renew their domain name! How many days did Advertlets.com went down I can’t really recall, but could be up to 1 week.

This time what could be the reason for a hard disk crash and no hard disk redundancy? Maybe Nuffnang used a single 80GB hard disk bought from Lowyat at a discounted price, and plugged it in a clone PC. Haha… ๐Ÿ™‚

Chinese New Year fiesta at Bandar Bukit Puchong

It was such a fun filled day at Bandar Bukit Puchong today because the developer of this township threw a great fiesta in celebration of the Chinese New Year. The so called Prosperity Fun Fiesta started as early as 11:30am but I wasn’t able to make it before 1:30pm so I unfortunately missed the lunch which was provided free! In fact there was still food left when I reached the venue opposite of the sales office, but because I was too busy taking photos, I had to starve for the sake of bring you good pictures! ๐Ÿ™‚

Let’s check out what I brought back from the fiesta. Today, we don’t talk about tech, Streamyx broadband, Internet, make money online, etc OK?

God of prosperity

First, say “hi” to the God of prosperity. Wish him Happy New Year and he will make sure your 2008 is filled with abundance of wealth and good health!

Sigma APO 200-500 mm f2.8 lens

Check out this huge ass DSLR lens from Sigma. Not surprisingly, this lens looks like a missile launcher because it’s focal length reaches 500mm but the aperture remains big at f2.8.

Sigma lens

If 500 mm isn’t enough for you, a dedicated 2x Tele Converter is supplied with the lens as standard and it can be used to change into a 400 – 1000 mm F5.6.

I think this lens is perfect for World Cup, Wimbledon, F1 racing, and any other events which requires a fast lens with super zoom capabilities. However, take a closer look at the picture (courtesy of Engadget.com), you need a big custom-made tripod for this lens. And since it should be very heavy, I guess you need a helper to carry this beast around too.

Cost wise could be close to a bungalow in Bandar Utama. Photo kakis, wanna get one or not? ๐Ÿ™‚

KFC offers free WiFi hotspots in Malaysia

It has really been a while since I last updated this blog… blame my long absence on the long Chinese New Year break and on the lack of Internet facilities in the town I am in now. Anyway, I was extremely glad to find that KFC actually offers free WiFi hotspot here. I am not sure if this is true for other KFC branches in Malaysia, but I don’t care… I grabbed my laptop, booked a nice table and setup my laptop ready for a few hours of blogging work.

KFC

In fact the day before I have already identified that table as it’s the only one near to a power socket. You need a power socket for your laptop to run a few hours, right? ๐Ÿ™‚
