Apple iPhone timeline

All the iPhone madness started at MacWorld 07 where Steve Jobs announced that Apple will soon be releasing a touchscreen phone called the iPhone. But did you know that one of the iPhone domain names owned by Apple, the iPhone.org was registered by Apple in the last century? Yes, it was way back in 1999!

Other than iPhone.org, other iPhone related domain names owned by Apple include iPhone.com and iPhone.net, both redirect to http://www.apple.com/iphone.

Now, of course there has been numerous interesting iPhone developments since 1999. But worry not, iPhone Gold has come up with a cool timeline of these developments starting from that first 1999 event up until the recent 3G iPhone release.

Firefox 3 quick review

On June 17th, something wonderful happened. Firefox 3 was finally released to the general masses at 1pm EST. Once the download link was available, I immediately clicked the download button faster than a cheetah pouncing on its prey. After almost a month trying the browser out, I decided to write what I like and hate about Firefox 3. So here it is…

Firefox 3

New Look

The moment I fired up Firefox 3, I immediately think it looks similar to Internet Explorer 7. For one thing, Firefox 3 tabs looks identical to the tabs from Internet Explorer 7. However, I really like the new bookmarks menu. When you open the add bookmark menu, it’s displayed in a small box which doesn’t take up a lot of space. I found this great because the bookmarks menu in Firefox 2 took up the whole screen just to add a simple bookmark. Also, in Firefox 2, some of the folders in my bookmark menu weren’t displayed.

A plain English explanation of what are blogs

If you’ve been surfing the web for a few hours, you’ve most likely heard of “blogs” or weblogs. But, what are blogs?

Blogger

A blog is a diary or journal on the Internet where the writer or more known as the “blogger” will write his/her views on a wide variety of subjects such as politics, news, pop culture, computers, food and drinks, and even observations on the world or simply provide links to useful websites. These mostly personal journals on the Internet have taken the web by storm. They are usually frequently updated and written in a personal tone. Different bloggers adopt different themes, sort of like a newspaper columnist but with no specialized training.

If the above quick explanation is still too difficult to digest, what about a very plain English explanation of what are blogs in video format?

Fake Paypal email and Paypal website

Look at this screen shot of the Paypal website… or more precisely a fake Paypal website. How clever is the thief? The website looks exactly the same as the authentic Paypal website except the URL.

Fake Paypal

In this case the URL is so much longer and has a folder called “paypal.com” in it. Luckily Firefox is smart to sense that this is a fake or the so called phishing website and warned me just in time before I tried to sign in. If I was foolish or careless to enter my real Paypal username and password, those people who operate the phishing sites will have access to my account and all the money from my checking account and credit cards. Think about it also make me sweat!

ICANN to allow new top-level domain names

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit organization that oversees the naming scheme for domain names, has decided to allow new top-level domain names ending in whatever the registrants like. Wow, you may not believe this… but you read me right, ICANN has decided to allow this!

Http

Soon, you will be able to register domain names ending in any extensions you want! Some day, you may be able to reach me using Kong.technology or Go.og.le! (Is there a .le country level domain name now?)

How to download and convert videos from FLV to MP4

Today, I’m going to show you how to download videos from non-Youtube sources. But first, you’re going to need the following software:

  1. Orbit Downloader– Orbit Downloader is similar to Free Studio below except that it only saves the videos in FLV (flash video) format.
  2. Free Studio – One of my favorite Freeware around. It can convert almost anything into mp4 format. Of course, it can only download videos from Youtube.

Now, simply follow the following steps to download and convert a video into MP4 format.

  1. Download The Tools!– Do I really need to explain this? Download the tools you’ll need, which are those I told you above.
  2. Visit Your Favorite Video Site– For this tutorial, I decided to use Myspace videos since I found this funny and yet vulgar Spongebob parody on the site called “Grandma’s Kisses”.Grandma's Kisses

Two great alternative web browsers for Mac, Shiira and Camino

If you are a Mac user then you could use one of the 4 major browsers (excluding Internet Explorer) such as the default Safari, Firefox and Opera.

These tie up 99% of the browser market but that doesn’t mean you have to be restricted to only these applications. There are a number of very viable alternatives, some built on the Trident or Gecko rendering engines and others from scratch.

Of the Mac browser alternatives I have recently discovered two recently which impressed me the most:

Shiira

Shiira browser

Shiira is a Japanese based browser with the goal “to create a browser that is better and more useful than Safari” (not too difficult in my opinion).

Keeping that in mind, Shiira is very similar to Safari in basic functionality and offers a lot of the same features but also offers a lot of enhanced functions and general usability improvements. Like Firefox, Shiira is open source and has been built upon WebKit (an open source application framework that provides a foundation upon which to build a web browser) and with Cocoa (Apple Inc.’s native object-oriented application program environment for the Mac OS X operating system) and runs on Mac OSX 10.4 and higher.
