Beautiful pop-up window

When you think of pop-up windows, you may laugh at me because making a link open a new window is one of the easiest things you can do with HTML. In the old days, we simply put a “target=xxxx” tag to create a pop-up window. This can be done in almost an instant, but undeniably it’s ugly.

You can of course use the Javascript:

<a href=”javascript:window.open(url);”>Your link here</a>

But this is ugly and dirty, both in terms of the accessibility and pop-ed up window itself. Look at the code snippet above, the a href tag is not linking to a link but instead it is running some javascript. This means the whole meaning of the link is gone!

Okay, you got the point. So, how do we make it accessible and good, with clean code?

Very easy, we use GreyBox. Basically, GreyBox makes our life easier by supplying the codes needed to build beautiful and clean pop-up windows. GreyBox uses the “rel” attribute. rel is used to describe the relationship between the current page and the href destination of the anchor. The whole line becomes something like this:

<a href=”http://google.com/” title=”Google” rel=”gb_page_fs[]”>Launch google.com in fullscreen window</a>

GreyBox

It’s very easy to setup and use GreyBox even if you are a first time user… just follow the instructions on their website. It’s FREE to download and use!

Why GreyBox?

  • It does not conflict with pop-up blockers
  • It’s only 22 KB!
  • It’s super easy to setup
  • It’s super easy to use
  • You can easily alter the style as it is controlled through CSS

Now, GreyBox really creates pop-up windows that don’t suck! πŸ™‚

Intel Core i7: Codename Nehalem

There’s no doubt that Intel has been wildly successful ever since they launched their line of Core processors. Previous to that, the desktop processor crown belonged to AMD for a good few years and their Athlon line-up, but unfortunately they didn’t manage to keep up with the rising costs of fabrication. The faux-pas with AMD’s quad core processors and subsequent rebranding into the tri-core Phenom shows just how challenging the fabrication and manufacturing process is.

But while AMD recuperates and sells off its fabrication business, Intel continues to dominate with their intellectual property by introducing the new evolution of Core. As you may have noticed, Intel launches a new architecture in one year, and in the next enhances it via a die shrink. This is common practice as shrinking the die allows engineers to optimize the existing architecture for maximum power savings and reduce heat output; a more refined model of the previous so to speak.

Maybank2u reverts to the classic version

It seems like just a few days after launching their new version, Maybank2u has perhaps realized the new version is more difficult for its users to use, and has thus reverted to the classic version. I thought this sort of thing should not have happened, they should have done enough user experience and system testing to make sure everything is OK first, before launching…

Anyway, Maybank2u now has this notice on the homepage.

Well, clicking on the login link will automatically direct you to the old login page. πŸ™‚

So, what do you think? You prefer the old classic version which works, or the more fancy newer version? πŸ™‚

Gcaldaemon: Integrating your calendar on the go

If you are like me, you have probably benefited greatly from the many calendaring applications that help you organize your life. As a university student, the ease-of-use and versatility of calendaring applications means that I can track my assignments, homework and any unusual classes with ease, providing me with a visual summary of what’s in store for the week so that everything can be done on time.

It is also sometimes a little bit depressing especially when you just want to take an hour off to watch a movie and get a guilt-trip when you see your calendar and all the activities and events that are supposed to be accomplished.

Calendar

Anyway, the benefits far outweigh this small problem which is why I still use the calendar today. In my case, Rainlendar is the calendaring application that I use and it’s clean, slick and simple and resides on your desktop so it does not obstruct anything.

Real Estate WordPress Theme

This WordPress theme looks so perfectly good, but worry not, it isn’t a premium theme which you have to buy to use it. Instead, I am releasing this WordPress theme for free, under the open source GPL license.

Real Estate theme

That’s a sneak peek at how the homepage of the blog is going to look like. The theme is optimized to take two 250×250 Google Adsense ads on the homepage right beside the featured post. I strongly recommend placing an image Adsense ad on the left, and a text Adsense ad to its right. The click through should be high… πŸ™‚
