Kogan intros world’s second Android phone

Just as excitement over the Android platform developed by Google started to wane as the G1 announcement is followed by a slew of other phones, Android is once again thrust into the spotlight when Kogan recently announced they will begin shipping the world’s second phone to use the Android OS in January 2009.

Kogan Android

Actually, the announcement has been made a few months back but nobody really paid any attention, however with the imminent release of the new Kogan Agora and Agora Pro, interest have been piqued. Ruslan Kogan initially intended for the phone to be sold at a price point of $199, but the forces of economics have since taken a beating and the new Agora and Agora Pro will debut at $299 and $399 respectively, and that’s in Aussie dollars so expects prices to fall if you are from another country =).

Google’s homepage evolution

This might be the most boring video if you do not appreciate the work and time the creator puts in to create this… or if you simply pro Microsoft. 🙂

Anyway, this YouTube video shows the evolution of Google’s homepage, from as early as 1997 to the present 2007!

Looks like the homepage hasn’t changed a lot over the years. It’s still very simple and straight forward, unlike Yahoo’s or Microsoft’s msn.com.

Can’t find a video which includes year 2008 though. Let me know if you came across one.

Nokia N97

Nokia welcomes another new addition to their family of N-series with the N97, which takes the crown as the crème-de-la-crème of Nokia’s flagship phone model. And on first glance, it seems to resemble a lot of the new phones that have come out in recent memory (cough G1, X1 cough).

Nokia N97

We have a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, tilt touch screen which measures 3.5″, A-GPS, 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss lens, WiFi-Bluetooth combo, and 32GB of on board memory. Pretty standard fare if you ask me and the price tag is expected to be in the $US700 region without plan, which brings it close to the pricing of the G1 which have similar features except the high-end camera. But then again the G1 has Android… while Nokia continues to harp on its own Symbian OS.

Maxis Broadband-ready Dell Inspiron Mini 9

Maxis and Dell is having a promotion in conjunction with the upcoming PC Fair. This time, they are offering a Maxis Broadband-ready Dell Inspiron Mini 9 at RM99 a month, for 24 months. It works out to be a whooping RM2376, not very cheap it seems. But to make the deal sweet, Maxis throws in 6 months of Maxis Broadband subscription.

Dell Mini 9

This ultra-portable mini laptop (or shall we call it a netbook) looks very sleek and beautiful. I would have fallen in love with it if not for its tiny hard drive.

8GB configured with a Solid State hard drive.

FoxReplace helps you search and replace in web pages

FoxReplace is a FireFox extension which adds find-and-replace functionality to web pages. This is especially useful for bloggers, webmasters, people who use web based emails or if you do a lot of writing in web forms. The ability to quickly search for and replace text is a godsend.

Foxreplace

This extension allows you to replace text fragments (strings) in a page by other text fragments. The system is based on substitutions, where each substitution has an input text which has to be replaced (the “Replace” field) and an output text by which the first has to be replaced (the “With” field). When a substitution is applied it’s over the whole content of a page (you can’t do partial substitutions at the moment). Substitutions can be case-sensitive or insensitive. The use of regular expressions is also supported.

Download this free FireFox add-on at the Mozilla.org website.

Maybank2u new interface is back

Yes, you heard me right. The Maybank2u new interface is back today, on the 1st day of December, good timing I suppose. If you could still remember, Maybank2u reverted back to the old classic version close to two months ago due to some unconfirmed reasons. Some say it was because of difficulty for users to use, and some say it could be due to the new system’s instability.

Anyway, today when I tried to transfer some funds to an associate, the response and user experience was pretty good.

Maybank2u

That’s the new welcome screen that greets you right after you login.

Fujitsu laptop offers free upgrade every 3 years for life

Fujitsu Siemens has come up with a very interesting proposition to attract more consumers to buy their notebooks. The LifeBook4Life deal allows you to buy a Lifebook series laptop from them and than get a new Lifebook every three years for the rest of your life!

Lifebook4life

How it works is really quite simple. You buy a Lifebook. Then, you pay a US$60 fee and register your new laptop with Fujitsu Siemens. Then, after three years, you mail in your old Lifebook and they send you a new one. Simple like that. That’s a lifelong laptop supply for the price of one!

Of course, your Fujitsu laptop has to remain in warranty to qualify for the replacement. That means, no mods, no cheap other name parts in it and etc.

If you are interested, check out the LifeBook4Life mini site.

The Pin Clock

If you are like me, you will not enjoy looking at the system clock on your Windows computer. It’s so small and not geeky enough. The same with the clock on your desk, it’s just too ordinary for a geek like us! Now, let me present you The Pin Clock which every self-proclaimed geek should own!

The Pin Clock

This nifty digital clock uses up to 3,000 pins to display the hours and minutes of the day. The clock pushes out these pins to display its numbers, and they automatically reshuffle themselves every minute to display the current time.

Although it doesn’t have any exciting specs and won’t illuminate in the night, it’s still absolutely cool. The minute I saw this, I immediately decided I should own this cute digital clock until I saw the retail price on Amazon.com… US$50.95. Well, maybe I need to take a few days to think about it first. 🙂

Four latest SOHO printers

The world of printers have remained nothing revolutionary… you have a cartridge with a small nozzle that darts back and forth across a piece of paper squirting ink on it, and that has largely remained the basic principle of printers since it was invented. Barring new technologies such as laser and ink-less printing, printers haven’t evolved much.

Today we will take a look at the four latest printers to come out from manufacturers worldwide; some of them retain their resemblance to traditional printers, others have branched out to areas no printer dare to dream of, and I hope you will enjoy it.

Casio PCP1000 and PCP-200

Casio PCP1000 and PCP-200

This behemoth from Casio sports a 7-in and 3.5-in LCD screen respectively. At first glance it looks like a really huge monitor attached to a keyboard which can spew paper. But it is in fact a printer, with a huge screen and an integrated keyboard that understands Japanese. The final piece of the puzzle is an integrated card-reader that accepts nearly all major formats including xD Picture Card.
