VeriSign, the company who is overseeing the .com and .net domain names, announced that they will increase the price of registration and renewal of these domains by October 15, 2007.
With about 62 million “.com†names and 9.1 million “.net†names in use, VeriSign stands to ultimately make $29 million a year from the increase, which will take effect Oct. 15. However, the price hike applies only to new name registrations and renewals, and customers can lock in the old prices until Oct. 14.
Quoted from USAtoday.
With the price adjustment, the wholesale price for a .com domain name will go up from US$6/year to US$6.42/year, and for .net domain name, it will increase from US$3.50/year to US$3.85/year. Leaving registras such as Godaddy having only little margin to play with. It’s expected that there would be same amount of price rise in selling price of domain names by these registras. Take Godaddy for example, 7% price hike in .com domain name will mean the price will go from the current US$8.95 to US$9.58! Not a big deal if you have only one domain name, but it’s a remarkable amout if you have 10 or more domain names!
