Top 10 downloads of 2007

We need to say goodbye to year 2007 and welcome year 2008 in a few days time. And it’s at this time of the year, lots of top 10 and best of the Internet lists start to appear. The editors of has also come up a list of the top 10 downloads of 2007 on their DownloadBlog – The Daily Download. You don’t know they also have a blog?! Perhaps from now on, you should subscribe to their RSS to get updated on what to download everyday! 🙂

Let me share a few of those that I like best from the list. The software below are in no particular preference or ranking order.

1. Miro

Miro player

Oh my goodness, how could I have missed this awesome video player which is actually free? Miro is a free open source internet TV and video player. It plays virtually any video file – QuickTime, WMV, MPEG, AVI, XVID, and more. Organize your collections, and much more! You still have reasons to keep Windows Media Player?

2. Pidgin

Pidgin is a must have Instant Messaging client for the avid chatters. With this program you can hook up and chat with your online buddies on any network you can think of. This include AIM, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, Groupwise, ICQ, IRC, MSN, MySpaceIM, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Sametime, XMPP, Yahoo!, Zephyr… *faints*…

3. Flock

Flock is a great browser, especially if you are into social networking. Built on Firefox, says it’s designed to make interfacing with social sites easy. I tried it sometime ago, but I haven’t been using it after that anymore. Now my favorite browsers are Firefox and IE. Well, IE occasionally when I need to check certain websites to see if it displays well in this Microsoft browser.

Looks like it’s time to start using Flock again! Please remind me to upgrade to the latest version first.

4. Camtasia Studio 5

Camtasia studio

Camtasia Studio is a full-fledged screen recording studio that has enough tools and settings to make a box office movie on your computer. I think it should be an overkill for bloggers who usually just want to make some simple screen shots. Anyway, I haven’t really tried this software… The only screen capture utility I need is the ever reliable Prt Scr.

That’s about it. My favorite software from the top 10 list as listed by For the full list, you can check out The 10 best downloads of 2007.
