26 Sep 2007 In: Computing

Everyone complain his Internet connection is slow. Those who are using Tmnet dial-up say so… those who are using Streamyx also complain Tmnut is cheating on them because they do not notice any speed improvement, or more precisely constant disconnection especially when they are using Bittorent to download movies! Let’s test our Internet speed today and see if your’s is slower than mine! We use Speedtest.net.

For the uninformed, Speedtest.net is a free broadband speed test with servers located all over the world so that you can get more accurate testings. Get your test results and compare with others from the same area, or even from other parts of the world.

I hate taking part in tests or quizzes because they require a fair amount of thinking, make my hair grow white! I have never done well in any tests. However, as a blog owner it’s good to know how good you are in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is essential to get your blog or website ranked higher for your target keywords in search engines. Higher ranking means more visitors and that means more revenues from your blog or website! Haha… I love money!

SEO quiz

SEOMOZ, a well known guru in the SEO industry has designed an online quiz for nothing but to test your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) knowledge. The test consists of 75 questions which covers almost every aspect of SEO. I took the test but the first question itself got me stuck for nearly 10 minutes because I couldn’t figure out which of the given list is the least important area in which to include my keyword(s)… to me all of them are fairly important… Haha…

My girlfriend and I now chat through webcam

23 Sep 2007 In: Gadgets

Check out my new webcam which I bought from PC Planet in Tesco, Puchong. I know nothing about web cams and the salesman gave me three options. Frankly, the one from AVF looked awesome in the design department, and it felt good in my hands too. I believe it should fit well on a laptop too with its flippable base. However, the salesman who seemed quite IT savvy recommended the other two models as according to him the AVF model doesn’t plug-and-play on Windows Vista, which I am using. You may have problem finding the correct device driver… this didn’t sound good.

So, AVF was out. The other two models were easy to decide as one of them looked horrible with 6 LED lights. Although they serve good purpose – to light up when the place is dark, but I don’t really like how it looked. So, it was obvious which one I have chosen.

Smiley emoticon is 25 today :-)

20 Sep 2007 In: Best of the Internet

One of the most widely used emoticon is the cute smiley face which consists of the ubiquitous ‘colon-hyphen-parenthesis’. I believe everyone love to use this especially in emails and blog posts.

Smiley

Do you know how its use started?

Twenty-five years ago, a Carnegie Mellon University professor by the name Scott E. Fahlman sent a message proposing the use of a colon followed by a hyphen and a parenthesis as a joke marker. It was the earliest recorded use of the smiley face, which has since become ubiquitous with online communication. It has become a serious contribution to the electronic lexicon.

This post is somewhat overdue as my colleague got this All-in-one HP box which functions as a printer, fax machine, scanner and copier at the same time a couple of months ago. Anyway, he was obviously happy with this purchase as he bought this at a bargained price. It was bought from Tesco at a very affordable price of RM349.

HP Officejet

Actually he was going to get a normal but cheaper Sharp fax machine at RM249 but saw this one when he walked out to pay. A quick calculation made him opt for HP Officejet. Only RM100 more and has so many features. Furthermore, it also uses ink cartridge No 27 which is the same for the other printer in our office. Very smart choice eh? :)
