Go out anywhere today and take a look. Unless you are in Siberia or some other remote place, everywhere around you there will be promotions or advertisements telling you to buy something, try something, or just plainly conveying information to you.

Just as the Internet is no spammed with ads, we often forget that the real world is also filled with ads and useless messages.

Advertisements are out there to gain attention. Any business or organization (even non-profit organizations) hoping to grow will need advertisements and promotions targeted at their respective audiences to achieve this purpose.

Advertising agencies have a whole host of people who work to get your message out there, from professional ad directors, designers and artists, to writers. Creating an advertisement that is cost effective and catchy is what every ad professional strive for. But what really makes advertising work is creative content.

The main idea of an advertisement is of course, to gain attention. By way of creative content, such as catchy lines, graphics and photos, all of it utilizes creativity and ingenuity, to make people take that second look.

As ads can be placed anywhere, on billboards and sidewalks, banners and posters, in printed media, or digital media. The possibilities are endless. Now we even see an allout tug-of-war between Apple and Google in the mobile device advertising space. Much of the ads out there is spam, but let’s take a look at some creative ads that work.

Podcasting offers a wonderful world of user-created content ranging from small, independent (or even one person) podcasts such as the Mr Brown show, a popular Singaporean comedy program, to large studio project such as The Official Lost Podcast.

There are literally thousands of streams of podcasts out there, some more exciting than others, but I am sure what whatever your preference, there are bound to be some that will suit your fancy. But how does one get access to the world of podcasting?

Well first off, podcast, or their video equivalent, vodcasts, are nothing more than a fancy term of calling an audio or a video file. Most podcasts are news-like in nature, bringing you the latest updates in the world of X, where X is pretty much anything you can imagine of, from celebrity entertainment to photography tips. Most of them are filmed or recorded no more than 30 minutes long, although longer podcasts, such as the ones from SlashFilm, can last hours on end.

Podcasts are a great complement to my habit of commuting from home to work. I just fire up something from Howstuffworks then proceed to my destination. Some people love to listen to music, but I find that podcasts are a great way of enriching yourself with knowledge, as well as learning quite a lot of useful tidbits as conversation starters.

Podcasts are often delivered as an RSS URL (also called a Feed), which simply means that its a self-updating link where the author will insert their latest episodes into the link. A podcast manager’s task is to collect and record all these links then provide a means of checking each ‘Feed’ for updated content. Then the option of downloading the recording as well as archiving it completes the task of a podcast manager. With this in mind, what are some of the podcast managers that you can use to get yourself started on the world of podcasting?

gPodder - This is a free, multiplatform podcast manager, useful when you are working on multiple systems and don’t want to have a different program for each platform. The interface is sparse but does all you need in a small, neat, efficient package. I find the exclusion of any built-in players to be especially liberating because it keeps the system drain low.

Miro - This open source project started off as a video player, then slowly evolved to become a podcast manager. It’s great at giving smooth playback of vodcasts and offer a slightly nicer interface than gPodder, as well as being great for streaming online media or other web-based tasks. Check it out of gPodder looks too dated for your taste.

iTunes - If you have an iPod, iTunes offers a great podcast manager built right into the software. However, looking for feeds are a little bit cumbersome due to there being no ability for you to directly specify the URL of your podcast feeds. You need to trawl through iTunes’ own database of podcasts, and not every podcast is available on their database, although a lot of useful and quality content is tracked by iTunes so it’s probably doing you a favor by filtering out all the junk on the Internet. And until another software comes out with a way to sync podcasts to your iPod Touch, iTunes will sadly remain your only manager.

Juice - Yet another free podcast manager that’s even lighter than gPodder, this manager’s sole task is to track and download podcasts, making it every light and useful on netbooks and older computers. In the past, I’ve had a few problems with Juice and have moved on to iTunes ever since, but in the meantime, the programmers at Juice have probably fixed all the bugs.

There you go, four great podcast managers for you to start. Now start gathering your favourite podcasts online!

Update: Since this article was published when Adobe Flash 10.1 was still in beta, it is probably no longer relevant to current Adobe Flash problems.

This particular problem is quite nasty. It only happened to me recently and here are some tips to overcome it, although it cannot be 100% solved.

Your computer may be suffering from this malaise without you being aware of it.

Recently I noticed that my computer has slowed down considerably. The problem was particularly acute when I was playing a certain Facebook Flash game in Google Chrome. Blaming the problem on an unoptimized Flash game running on Google Chrome, I did not bother fixing it until it got more severe. Okay – until a cute female friend asked for my help…. that’s when I decided that it’s really a problem worth looking into

The Cause

So I ran the game in Firefox and Internet Explorer and found out that the problem is not any fault of Google’s. Investigating further, I finally followed the trail to some sites where people congregated and compared notes on Adobe Flash 9 and 10, like this one here.

And I found out that there are so many tormented souls like me out there!

Others have noticed this sluggishness running Youtube videos. These people have 3 GHz cpus and 4 GB memory but they have the same problem. Youtube is known to work fine in mobile devices running Firefox in only 256MB of available memory space – try googling Nokia N900 – so it cannot be due to people’s computer being old and unable to deal with Adobe’s Flash requirements.

Many have speculated that Adobe Flash’s resource hogging is due to Adobe Flash being a poorly written program, with unoptimized code. Some even say that this is a new version of the Microsoft-Intel conspiracy theory where these giant corporations worked together, to get us to fork out more of our hard-earned money so that we have to buy more computers and help the IT industry prosper.

The Fix:

1. Uninstall Adobe Flash

Really important! You can skip step 2 but not this!

2. Get the beta version, Adobe Flash 10.1 Beta.

If you don’t want to run this beta version, then reinstall the current version at http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/. Just remember NOT to get the free McAfee security app.

After the uninstalling and reinstalling, I find that my Facebook game is more responsive now – my friend says hers is playable now and my Facebook gaming life has improved – I get to spend as little time on it as possible

I won’t say that it’s 100% solved – I still notice that Adobe Flash leaks memory frequently in Firefox and Google Chrome. To resolve this, feel free to restart the slow responding browser or wait for my next article on how to identify and close the memory leak.

Hopefully, this short guide here can solve your problem. If not, then your problem may be a different one or is more severe than this and I can’t really help you but direct you to this article and see for yourself that you are not alone in this.

Happy gaming!

The phenomenal growth of Facebook and Twitter has made a huge impact on the online communities, and these websites continue to push what is possible in Web 2.0, developing new technologies to deal with interesting new problems posed by having such fast, instant communication possible all the time and also in enhancing the look and feel of websites making them more dynamic and responsive. Along with the growth of these social networks come tools that promise to fix or enhance your experience using them. And if statistics are any indication, you will appreciate the more than 30% of time spent while surfing these websites in the course of your day.

First up are two very useful scripts for Greasemonkey that are called FB Purity and Facebook Fixer. FB Purity takes aim at annoying quizzes and blasts them out of Facebook alltogether. Well, technically they are just hidden from you using clever manipulation of CSS scripts, but at least you will enjoy a cleaner looking and less obnoxious home page. Next is Facebook Fixer, which does a whole lot of behind-the-scenes changes so that the new Facebook resembles the older style. More importantly, it adds a really useful feature whereby when you mouse over any images, it will automatically pop up the full resolution picture at the side. Very useful when browsing galleries.

A word of warning though, these scripts need the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox, and may cause instabilities if and when Facebook updates their website, which may happen often. So far I only had problems once, and the fix is simply to disable all scripts until an update comes along for it. These two have helped me the most in cleaning up and making Facebook more user friendly and they are thus highly recommended.

Next up is a Firefox extension called Archive Facebook, which does exactly that. After installing, navigate over to Facebook and a link should show, allowing you to backup all your pictures, messages, activity stream, etc. Everything related to your account will have a copy recreated on your hard drive, which is very useful for downloading all your profile pictures.

Finally, TweetDeck is the app of choice when it comes to integrating Facebook, Twitter and MySpace into a single application. The tool is currently the second most popular Twitter application (behind Twitter’s own website) and offers features such as sending and replying tweets, status updates to Facebook and creating groups to monitor selected conversations, as well as previewing thumbnails and un-shortening shorturls so that you can see which websites are going to. It’s wrapped up in a shiny Adobe AIR interface and performs well. I have already replaced Digsby with TweetDeck on my computer.

With these tools, Facebook and Twitter will hopefully work even better for you. Any other tools you can share which improves your experience on these two web services?

Finger crossed that hopefully nobody will pick up the exact same branding name as yours. Also, don’t misspell your name, as it is not editable. And NO, You can’t try to sell Pepsi or whatever big names you grabbed either, it’s not transferable, and they could report you for infringement. So be honest and play fair, register your (brand) name only.

The Twitter phenomenon continues to bury itself into our lives and the latest Twitterrific 2.0 app available for the iPhone and iPod Touch makes it even more easier for you to waste your time “tweeting” from anywhere.

The application is a slick upgrade from the previous Twitterrific and provides a host of new features making it currently one of the best Twitter apps for Apple’s handheld currently.

The moment you start the app and log in to your account, you are directed to the Sources main page showing you the latest topics (so called trending topics) currently being discussed in your Twitterverse. Once you have selected an account and viewed the list of updates, you can choose to view @username profiles, and also the option of marking tweets for later reading, although with 140 words for each tweet, it’s not exactly hard to read on the spot instead of saving it.

The app also comes with three skins to give you some choices. It is available as a free download which is ad-supported, or you can choose to pay a fee to get the ad-free version.

The ability to have access to Twitter from this slick app is pretty powerful, and also allows you to be able to access Twitter using GPRS or 3G on your iPhone. For those running on iPod Touches, it is less useful as WiFi coverage here isn’t great yet, but that said, give Twitterrific a spin and you won’t need another Twitter app on your Apple handheld ever again… until the next version update that is.

Twitter Toolbar is a handy application for Twitter users to connect and share their findings with their Twitter peers. For those who constantly log in to Twitter to manage their conversations, the process could be cumbersome at times. How would you like to have Twitter Toolbar installed on your browser instead, while having to explore numerous third party apps to enhance your Tweeting experience?

What differentiates Twitter toolbar from Twitterfox is the multiple third party Twitter apps that come along with the toolbar. I will go through them briefly later on but first, let’s have a look at the installations.

My friend said that Twitter is like the biggest garbage dump in the Internet. But then again, the same could be said about most forums and discussion websites (eg: Blogs). The trick is to know enough to sift through the manure for the little gems that can hide in between, and Twitter represents that same philosophy.

The first and most important use of Twitter is as a supplementary search engine. This is due in part to the sheer size and community of Twitter, which spans millions of users such that your searches can frequently bring you to important pieces of information that you need.

For example, if you need to get the latest information on a particular news story, American Idol results or something of that sort, it can take some time for proper news websites to report the information. We can rely on blogs to get more up-to-date information but that way isn’t perfect. Twitter though fits this type of searches exactly as people hit Twitter just seconds after an event, with short snippets with exactly the information you need. Thus, as a way of following developing stories in “near real-time”, nothing can beat Twitter and the legions of people that make this possible.

You can also use Twitter to monitor important things that you care about.

Developers of your favorite games or programs usually have their own Twitter pages that let you know the progress of something. Stars are also increasingly getting on the Twitter bandwagon, although be warned there are an equal amount of fakes out there as well. Breaking news also spread quickly through Twitter, although I still prefer to take my news via RSS, as it allows me to quickly get the full story if I find it interesting.

Finally, if you have enough followers, Twitter can be amazingly good at getting answers to your questions. Bad at all this technology mumbo jumbo? Add lots of your geek savvy friends and pretty soon you will have an army of people that is ready and willing to help out should you have any questions!

So we are all familiar with YouTube and Metacafe, both serve as video streaming platforms for users to upload and share video clips. But what about Hulu??

As I was reading through an article: You Like Hulu: Video Site Shows Strong Growth, I was having jaw-dropped moments when it announces that Hulu has been showing tremendous growth lately, with video views increased by 62% in 6 months since launched in October 2008; 380 million video views and a 2.6% market share. The author, Ben Parr claims that Hulu is to be second only to YouTube. I’m not surprised, since Hulu is actually on the no.4 spot for TIME’s Best Inventions of 2008 out of 50 other entries.

What is Hulu?

According to Internet News, Hulu is a joint venture web video site for NBC Universal and News Crop. Since October, 2008, it has been streaming video clips, ranging from full-length TV programs, movies and trailers for various networks, such as Fox, PBS and even film studios like Warner Bros, Sony etc.

No downloads available, yet the viewing is F.O.C. You won’t be expecting the most recent blockbuster movies (except trailers) up there, but the good-old ones such as Fifth Element, Ghostbusters etc are to be found, along with the popular daily talk shows or drama, like Heroes, House, 24 and so on.

How is Hulu different from YouTube?

It has strict rules about accepting unsolicited videos – so you won’t be seeing much of home-made, crazy videos from random users as in YouTube. Instead, you will be seeing a lot more productions from major studios and TV networks. There are still rooms, of course, for users’ submission, yet beware submitting copyrighted videos or you will be held responsible under the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act).

Who Are Likely to Enjoy Hulu?

In fact, anyone who is a big fan of movies/tv programs may appreciate the excellent streaming quality Hulu offers to the viewers. The flexibility and convenience of viewing according to your own schedule is a big plus. Also, by signing up to Hulu, you get to create reviews and discussions for the program you’ve watched.

What’s the BIGGEST Bummer of all?

Currently, it is only available in the U.S.!

However, there is still possibility for it to go aboard and if it does, there is bound to be a major impact to YouTube’s current video streaming market and viewers rate. So watch out, and be prepared to get “hulufied” anytime!

Twitter has recently, emerged as one of the hottest trend in social media. People are literally talking about it all over the world and news media; even celebrities are joining Twitter. Now what’s the deal with Ashton Kutcher beating CNN in twitter followers’ count, and Oprah tweeting from her talk show? What is so special about this blue bird that catches everybody’s attention all of a sudden?

Today, we’ll be taking a little sneak peak at this Twitter application.

Twitter is a microblogging platform that allows people to share “what are you doing?” to their network of followers. Think about it as the combination of blogging & instant messaging, but with fewer characters (140 per posting) & wider crowds.

Ok, I get the idea, then how do I start?

Start by signing up, picking yourself a username, filling up the profile page and you’re good to go. You could start with your first tweet, but be pre-warned, not everyone is interested in “I’m having lunch now” all the time. Be conversational and people will appreciate it.

What’s with the following/followers?

“Following” = people you choose to follow, whom you’re interested in knowing their updates (which we refer to as tweets).

“Followers” = people who are following you. Your tweets will only be visible to your followers so they can respond to you accordingly.

I have nobody to talk to…

Start off your network building via ‘Find People’ option in your Twitter page;

or based on the keyword entered in Twitter Search, you’ll get a real-time results of the existing public conversations.

Example: If you’re interested in tech news, try ‘technology’ in the search box, and locate those who’re within your niche.

I heard there are “special Twitter codes” to communicate with each other?

There are, in fact, some special terms to be used to communicate efficiently with other Twitter users. Here are a glimpse to the basic ones:

@username + message:

To respond to someone, simply address him/her as ‘@username’ then type your message. This could be seen publicly by followers who are following both you and the ‘username’.

D username + message:

Direct Message (DM), is a private message between 2 individuals. Nobody could see the message except you two.

Example: d abc Could you please help….?

RT username + message:

This is one of the powerful and most used code in Twitter. Literally, it means repeating/passing along other person’s tweet so your followers could catch a glimpse at it. It could be an interesting quote, valuable info or picture sharing. The ethic of RT is to maintain the username of the person who sent you the message, as an appreciation and a respectful thing to do.

Example: abc received a tweet from xyz, and intend to share this info with the followers:

RT @xyz 10 Ways you could improve your traffic to your site (link)

So there you have it, the basic course of Twitter. Darren Rowse has made a great post about 5 Things To Do As A New Twitter User, which is a good guide for those who are planning for a Twitter kick start. See you in Twitter!
