Sometimes, you really need to keep things simple. You don’t really want the full power of a Microsoft Outlook, Windows Mail, Outlook Express or Mozilla Thunderbird to handle the simple job of shooting an email as these programs tend to be overloaded.
This is when promoting Gmail to the lofty position of default email client seems to be an attractive alternative as it opens up pretty fast for a web application. Unless, you really have a slow connection, or heaven forbid, a dial up connection – which is a relic of the last millenium in this time and age.
How to make Gmail your default email client?
For Google Talk users:
Double click on the Google Talk icon in the system tray and click on the Settings link, then check the “Open Gmail when I click on email links” box in the Settings window. “OK” and done!
For Gmail Notifier users (Not compatible with Google Toolbar):
Right click on its system tray icon, select the Options menu and tick the box next to “Use Gmail for internet mailto: links”.
Select your favorite browser in the drop down menu. Done!
TIP: You may get an error stating “Cannot connect to your mailbox. Service temporarily unavailable.” which is caused by a bug in the Gmail Notifier for those of you who have “Browser connection: Always use https” selected under “Gmail > Settings > General (tab)”.
IF so,
1. Download this registry patch from Google support.
2. Unzip and double click on the file called notifier_https.reg to install it. Or, right click and select “Merge”.
4. Click ‘yes’ to confirm that you want to add the information to the registry.
5. Close and restart the Gmail Notifier.
The other file, notifier_https_undo.reg is to delete the registry key if you ever need to uninstall it.
Done!
For Mozilla Firefox users
If you don’t have the programs above, and for some reasons don’t want to install them either, you can still try the mod below, but only if you use Firefox.
1. Type ‘javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler(“mailto”,”https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s”,”Gmail”)‘ minus the outermost quotation marks into the address bar.
Take out the ‘s’ from ‘https’ if you don’t use https for Gmail.
Press Enter.
2. If you see “Add Gmail (mail.google.com) as an application for mailto links” at top of your browser below the address bar, click on the “Add Application” button.
If you don’t: From the top menu, go into “Tools” > “Options” (or “Firefox” > “Preferences” for Mac users), select the “Applications” tab. Find “mailto” and select “Use Gmail”.
Done!
A Final Word
Personally, I am a Google Talk user, so the choice was easy for me; but if I don’t have either Google proggies installed, I would go for the Firefox option. I would also choose Gmail Notifier last as it always have an unnecessary pop-up to prompt me for connection to Gmail during startup.

Gmail has definitely won me over. From being a sceptic in the past, to being a daily user of several gmail accounts and google docs. I haven’t looked back, and will actually have no qualms with gmail being my defaut email client.

I still use outlook for most of my e-mailing, but this is another reason to consider migrating to gmail. It is quite inconvenient to have to copy and paste an e-mail address instead of just clicking on the e-mail link.

I haven’t really used outlook for 5 years or more.
A good side benefit of migrating to Gmail is that you can use Google Documents, which is getting more and more useful as an online (and collaborative) version of Microsoft Office.

@mobilephone:
Google Toolbar, like all toobars, is a security risk for me. I don’t use and I don’t really want to recommend it, hence it is barely mentioned in this article even though it’s another possible option for this article.

I take it back. I am moving to gmail. Issues with service provider and hence I’m moving hosts. Now is the time to move email and I’m part way though a move to Google Apps. So far so good. Changing it all over today — well that’s the plan.

@ Laptop Briefcase – At the very least you should change from Outlook to Thunderbird. If you’re using FireFox then Thunderbird just falls so naturally to hand and is sooo easy to use. I especially like the tabbed pages, just like FireFox.

I find it a bit weird that a product by Google… is “Not” compatible with another Google product – the Google Toolbar, unless I am reading it all wrong. On a side note I do use Google talk myself.

Gmail is great. It can handle massive volume. It’s intuitive, groups emails in conversations, has awesome spam filtering and is usually fast.. Oh, it’s searchable quickly, and can do pop3 and bring everything into one central account. Integrates with Google docs, more … holds what, 7 gig?

The smooth integration with other Googel services, like Docs, is another major benefit.

@Geoff: you’ve pretty much got me convinced. I was worried that their spam filters might not be as good as I can get on outlook. So I will have to look into consolidating all of my e-mail accounts into one gmail account.

Did anyone know that you can add + to the end of the first part of your gmail address followed by anything you like for example something+siteyouareregisteringto@gmail.com then you know which site shares your details with spammers and you can filter out all those emails.

There are also some third party notifiers which are available in the market to handle mailto links. If you have Google apps then gmail notifier won’t work for you.

I have done this and my PC still tries to default to Outlook. Is it due to running multiple instances of Google Talk? Or is it because Vista won’t allow it?

@TC:
I am not sure about Vista coz I no longer use it but the first result from a search on Google for “vista default email” stated that you cannot do this in Vista. Sorry!
But you can make Windows Mail, and probably Thunderbird your default email.
Has anyone successfully done this in Vista? -_-?

I did this: Right-Click on the link for the browser (Chrome Plus in my case) and properties => destination copy / paste and then put the extent indicated by the friend being thus:
“C: \ Users \ * \ AppData \ Roaming \ ChromePlus \ chrome.exe” https: / / mail.google.com / mail? Extsrc = mailto & url =% 1.
You can also create a txt file with the following contents:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Classes \ mailto \ shell \ open \ command]
@ = “\” C: \ Users \ \ Schürmann \ AppData \ Roaming \ ChromePlus \ \ chrome.exe \ “https: / / mail.google.com / mail? Extsrc = mailto & url =% 1″
save with extension .reg and then double-click it.
