In the recent IDC Green IT Forum, a survey showed that 85% of respondents believe that IT will play a medium to large role in reducing its environmental impact.
Some 68% of respondents think of energy efficiency first when thinking about Green IT.
51 percent said their organization pursues green initiatives because of the potential cost savings, nearly 80 percent admit they have no set budget in place for green IT or sustainability initiatives.
Last week we saw the launch of 2 new models by HP.

HP dx2810 Special Edition Desktop PC, which features an energy-efficient power supply and is 80 percent recyclable by weight. The special edition PC also features a grey and silver bamboo imprint on a black bezel design.
In HP’s Press Release statement, it said “HP dx2810 Special Edition Desktop PC’s breakthrough 85% energy-efficient power supply delivers excellent value and is packed with features including an energy-efficient Intel® multi-core processor that small and medium-sized businesses need to elevate productivity and achieve business impact.”
Apparently HP will be donating US$10 (RM35) from the sale of every HP dx2810 Special Edition Desktop PC to the WWF Coral Triangle Program (a conservation program for marine life in Indo-Pacific).
RRP: RM2,900

HP t5730w Thin Client – is a stand-alone, desktop PC alternative for small and medium-sized businesses.
A solid state design with no moving parts! HP claims that users will enjoy a reduction of as much as 60 percent in energy consumption over a traditional PC, thereby also resulting in significant IT cost savings. Comes with 18-inch monitor, keyboard and mouse and preloaded with Windows® XP Embedded. ENERGY STAR power supply.
RRP: RM1,520
In IDC’s Green IT Forum, IBM’s Steve Sams (Vice President of Global Technology & Facility Services) shared some insights on IT efficiency, noting that 77% of Data Center people don’t pay their own electric bills. So where is their economic incentive to improve?
Personally I don’t check my electricity bill, and I know that air-conditioning eats up most of it. I’m not too worried about Energy Efficient Computing for now, but I guess we are in recession now… most business are looking to cut costs and Green IT is a sexy buzz word.

Personally I’m not a fan of HP computer hardware. I’ve given them a few chances and they always seem to have problems within a year or two. The t5730w does look like a sexy little computer though. It reminds me more of a PS2 than a computer.
It does make sense for companies to pursue energy efficiency with their computers. Depending on how big a company is, all of their computers could add up to a decent amount of electricity usage. It’s also the easy kind of initiative that makes a company look good.

My trusty old HP laptop has been with me for many years, and apart from hard drive failure which was really my own fault, it has been a godsend. I will happily support HP whenever purchasing IT hardware. Their printers and fax machines are my 1st choice too!

That computer is what I call Sweeeet! My current computer sucks. Why? I think it’s probably because I was too excited of learning about hardware and decided to build a computer instead of buying a branded one.
No matter how much I look for, the casings suck and so does my motherboard. I did not even know that a desktop PC is dead now and thought it was more cooler and got that. I’m just hoping to get a new one now.

Energy efficient computers! Hmmm… in economics it’s called product differentiation.
HP is more expensive than Dell so they gotta find something different to say… anyway if the energy savings is really true, it would be a great effort towards green computing!

They should really work on some “green laptops”. I know those use a lot less energy already but if they could cut that in half we could get a lot more battery life.

I think since we are in a recession anyway, any cost savings can help businesses and people in their homes… and if there is the added benefit of helping the environment, then why not?! The new HP desktops look fantastic.. so slimline and shiny.. I love the black HP models.. they look so modern. I think they would be well worth the money. You would know you were helping the environment because of it’s power saving ability and the 80% recyclable factor really is a bonus as well.. might get myself down to PC world soon to check them out

does a tree on my desctop make my computer more green? LOL.
in fact, the manufacturers nowadays are forced to make more “green” computers, so we just need to have frequent hardware updates.
