*disable boot from a CD in the BIOS
*just make sure you password-protect the BIOS
*also put a lock so people won-t open the side of the case and remove the CMOS battery, disabling the BIOS password
*somewhat time is needed for this process but security is always good :)

Wow, I've never seen so many people lose their heads over such a simple piece of software. To all who have lost themselves to paranoia, this software doesn't do anything that couldn't already be done. All things considered, the act of password protecting a profile only keeps the honest people honest. Anyone who knows enough to about computers to do any real damage does not need this tool to do so. If you are worried about sensitive data, keep it on an encrypted external hard drive. All someone needs to access any files on a hard drive is a $9 sata to usb adapter or a bootable thumb drive with linux or bart pe. Creating a password reset CD is a simple way to access the actual OS, and if the objective of the hacker is to create mayhem, there is nothing more irritating than your password not working.

Ultimately, I find Kon Boot very useful as an IT professional. When working on a clients computer I don't have to go through the 10 minute process of resetting the password as it takes about 2 minutes to run Kon Boot and it returns to normal when the system is rebooted.

if your looking to defend yourself from this awesome piece of software. The only way is to encrypt your entire harddrive. A good piece of software to encrypt with is Truecrypt

http://www.truecrypt.org/

as to getting the software itself, you can get it here

http://www.piotrbania.com/all/kon-boot/

pick any of the downloads that say "CD-Iso"

when you unzip the file the password is "kon-boot" minus the quotations.

On a windows:
insert a blank CD (doesnt have to be very big, i used a 700mb)
clicking on the Iso should open the option to burn to a CD

mac:
open disk utility
go to "file"
click "open disk image"
then navigate to the Iso and select it.
it should mount itself
click on the new mounted file and click the "burn" button
looks like a circular hazardishy sign thingy

Using kan-boot:
insert your new CD into the drive of your target computer
reboot
press f12 while rebooting
select the CD drive
enjoy

If you lost your windows log on password, you can try these methods:

Method 1: Log on as admin to reset the password. When installing Windows, it automatically creates an account "Administrator" and the default password is blank. If you have previously created a password reset disk, you can use it to reset the password also.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305 for more info.

Method 2: You can try free software such as Ophcrack,Offline NT Password & Registry Editor,PC Login Now and Kon-Boot. More details here: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/passrecovery.htm

Method 3: Use 3rd party password recovery tool (eg. Windows Password Rescuer and Windows password tools) to reset your windows password. See help page at http://www.daossoft.com/documents/how-to-reset-window-2000--xp-vista-win7-password.html
