Have you heard of U Mobile? Obviously it’s the country’s newest cellphone service provider. joining the ranks of Maxis, Celcom and DiGi. According to Wikipedia, U Mobile was founded in 1998 as MiTV Networks Sdn Bhd, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of U Television Sdn Bhd which was formerly known as U Telecom Media Holdings Sdn Bhd and MiTV Corporation Sdn Bhd.

According to the salesman at their booth at Bandar Puteri, U Mobile is now operating the new 018 prefix mobile network. As one of the 3G mobile technology license holders in Malaysia, apart from wireless broadband, it’s going to offer Mobile Live TV also. Instead of typical 3G streaming, the videos delivered via Mobile Live TV to subscribers should be of DVD quality.
Now, of course I haven’t tried their unlimited broadband service. But they do look pretty good. At RM78/month, you get unlimited broadband access, together with a HSDPA USB modem for free. If within 8 days, you are not completely satisfied with their service or the access, you can return the modem for a full refund - including the RM50 activation fee! 8-Day money back guarantee, what’s there to lose?

However, since this is a new service, coverage is fairly limited now. Only certain areas in Klang Valley are covered so far and these include Petaling Jaya, Cheras, Subang, Ampang, Gombak, Kajang, Klang and Puchong.
What sort of speed you can expect. According to the salesman, up to 3.6 Mbps. All these craps are true or not I have not idea, I will leave it up to you to try and share with us. Go to their booth at the food court in Bandar Puteri, Puchong should you need more information or if you wanted to sign up.
You go sign up, test, and share with me how well it works. You can also take this opportunity and I might just pay you US$10 for it?
Anyone knows any news on WiMAX?

Maxis is better than Celcom for me. The price is a little higher if they want to compete with the major providers.

anyway i think i went to a survey for it, sooner they might introdue along with the cabel tv which sumthing like the starhub in singapore, moreover they will introdue more services such as online capacities to store data, free phone call from a broadband to another and so on. need to go have a look i think should be have a booth in times square also since the place which to promoted the MiTV.

Where I live, I can’t even get a decent broadband connection for my PC let alone a 3G mobile internet . The max speed we can get is 256kbps and its quite expensive.
I wish I was living in your country.

I live in gombak, just sign-up with u-mobile, all I can say is, this broadband is not so gr8, downloading only at 3 to 7kbp/s and uploading only at 10kbp/s maybe it’s brand new or maybe it’s just a craps like others BB. The salesperson told me that gombak has a good coverage, but I think maxis 384k is better than this. The good thing about this is only the tiny modem that considers a free gift after you complete 2 yrs contract n if you want to terminate the contract you have to pay a certain amount for the modem. in this case I think celcom is better than u-mobile n maxis (no string attached). However there is 8 day trial period 4 u guys to try, so grab the chance on day 6 or 7 go n take back your RM50.
p/s - good for browsing bad for down/uploading (very BAD).
UNLIMITED? check out their FAQ.

Hi there, i have already tried it out. It’s utterly rubbish! Don’t trust the salesperson… what average speed is 1.8 , found that even in time square only provide 1.2 to 1.6 =( and ohm, unlimited access not unlimited downloads! =) well, i only get 50 kbps, nvm… i rather pay rm12 for star bucks instead of “so damn” slow connection.

Well… my advice to u all is DON’T EVER take that risk. Really damn slow! According to the salesman, the speed is same with streamyx but…….. A LIE!
So don’t try.

i just found out that multiple users shared the same ip address online. it’s too late for me to cancel without paying for the modem since it’s over 8 days. looks like i’ve fallen into the ‘if it’s too good to be true…”
anyway, i have to cancel and get stuck with a worthless modem which have to be reconfigured (which i dont have any idea how to yet), to work with another service if such is available.

Let’s look at the bright side -
It’s far better than using two tin cans connected to a string….at least there’s no echo and eventually, you can paint your house when it’s finished downloading….
Future is rather dark here mates - I foresee legal issues if your’e not fast to return within the next 8 days….cheerio!

Guys Guys..
I am on my second trial now. The first being the week starting 23rd April - 30 th April. And now running from 4th of May… I was told you can have up to three times trial, if you don’t mind the deposit. I paid up the deposits mind you! Both times at that. Now Guys, i am not after a freebie, but rather, i really want to give this U Mobile a try. Seems like the second trial is as bad if not worse than the first trial. Ok give these guys some credit. They claimed they on average 1.6-1.8 mbps. ( 12am onwards?) During the day it would be like 1.2-1.4 average. Sounds to good to be true? Its very good in fact, i would reckon. Do check it out the speed in your area of coverage. They are not telling lies at all.Its the truth.Check it out yourself
http://www.izzi.com.my/speedtest/
Now for the BOMBSHELL..These guys actually have the audacity to have upload speeds of only 50-60 kbps?Wats the catch here?
I will post my results here
Last Result:
Download Speed: 1799 kbps (224.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Sat, 10 May 2008 at 00:53:11 AM
Upload Speed: 59 kbps (7.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
What’s the deal here mates? I don’t wish to comment further. But i would recommend that you highly reconsider other options before committing to some deals which will set you back at several hundred Ringgit upon the expiry of 8 days
Cheers mate.

Hi.. I’m currently using digi data plan which I can’t really take the slow speed anymore. So I was tempted to try out the u-surf thing. How was it?? Goodd? not good? I can’t use maxis because the connection is really slow apparently because I’m living above the 5th floor. The maxis salesperson cheated me! And now my only choice is digi

The real fact about umobile DL & UL
Download average speed = 1800kbps = 225kBps
Upload average speed = 60kbps = 7.5kBps
Obviously, Umobile upload speed is extremely slow. I also noticed that umobile has been throttled or banned any download manager software such as bitcomet, free download manager, xunlei, etc.
If u use any of the mentioned software, you won’t be able to download files smoothly, they will lag you.
About the download speed, they actually achive the speed of 1.8Mbps but their routers are not configured to the optimum setting therefore everyone get jammed when browsing the websites, except izzi.com.my perhaps under the same internet cloud therefore we can surf this izzi pages very fast at 1.8Mbps!!!
Conclusion, umobile is sucking now but i do not know their future, and how long they will improve their congested network.

u mobile is great..i’ve just signed up few days ago..the speed at my place in kajang is awesome..
dl=1400kb/s(average)
up=slow, 60-70kb/s(average)
very stable, even though i only get 1 bar..
download torrent and other p2p can reach up to 80kb/s..
direct link download can get nearly 200kb/s..
but there is limitation until 5gb only per month..
dont know what will happen if we xceed the limitation..

Wah that’s fast for you guys….. The place i stayed is damansara perdana area. My speedtest using u mobile only got me 350+kbps for downloading and 80+kbps on uploading and this is the fastest I get so far on 1 out of the 4 days I tested during the free trial. The other days was going as slow as 50kbps to 90kbps on downloading. Sometimes it’s like totally no response. All these are based on signal bar of 2 to 3 bar. Was thinking at least I can bring with me when I go for travelling. Too bad, I have to go back to streamyx.

Umobile is cheating on consumers!
When u subscribe umobile broadband first 7 days u can surf up Internet very fast.
After that they will throttle your speed, block a lot of ports, block application and encourage u to unsubscribe!
When you cannot withhold with their bad service, during termination of service they will want you compensate RM800 for unsubcription!
It is true. I worked before with Umobile. Their technical team is limiting yr Internet speed.
