UPDATE 8 April 2009
Check out the all new P1 WiMAX USB Modem. It’s so small and sexy you will want to bring it with you all the time… and flash it when you see some hot chicks around.

Looks like many of you are interested to know what are the big broadband providers in Malaysia, or at least those who are happening and actively promoting their broadband services. Easy, they were in the recent PC Fair. I have not only seen them, I have took a few pictures too. Check these pictures out.

Streamyx. Although Streamyx is still the market leader in Malaysia, at least in terms of number of subscribers, but they are still very active in promoting their services. Remember the “Merdeka RM77″ promotion? I think they are scared the other players are catching up.

P1 broadband. A new kid in the lucrative broadband market in Malaysia. I have signed up with them at the PC Fair itself. The whole signing up process took less than 3 minutes… although I have spent another 10 minutes chatting with the promoter. She’s cute and chatty.
More info on P1 broadband.

Maxis broadband. I nearly signed up with them as a backup to my Streamyx line. But then I found out they don’t have good coverage outside of the Klang Valley… no coverage outside of Kuching in Sarawak for instance. So if I went back to Sarawak, can’t use in Sibu lor. No good.

Celcom broadband. Out of the many wireless broadband providers, I think Celcom is the only one having HSDPA which is supposedly much faster than the usual 3G. I could be wrong, but does Maxis support HSDPA too?
Didn’t see DIGI broadband here… does DIGI offer broadband services other than the EDGE? Which broadband provider are you using now, good or not?

So far I never heard about DiGi Broadband before. Even TIME NET also never promote their broadband service before too.
Anyway you never take a look on IZZI Broadband?
Actually I have signed P1 Broadband service at p1.com.my I used their connection at my college before. Connection not bad you can try on it
So far P1 does not cover whole klang valley area. Mostly cover on PJ and Sri Petaling

MerDuriaN,
I didn’t see iZZi broadband at PC Fair… although I have seen them at a number of places, such as PJ Digital Mall, and at MyBroadband2u.com.
MyBroadband2u.com has a counter, or shop in front of the exits from Carrefour at Mid Valley. They are supposed to offer whatever broadband you want here, a one-stop broadband shop, but when I inquired about P1, they have not even heard about it. They do not offer Maxis broadband too. In short, they only have iZZi and Streamyx. You say crappy or not?

Maxis was the 1st to launch HSDPA last year. The map coverage area provided by Maxis was their HSDPA area. The service also works in their 3G areas like KK, Kuching, Melaka, Ipoh and so on…
Anyone seen celcom’s map? Which are celcoms exact HSDPA coverage sites? Please share

I’m a DIGI Broadband user for more than 2 months now. For RM66/month (previously was RM99), you can get UNLIMITED upload and download access. Yes, I know.. I know.. they only have EDGE and the speed is SLOW but it’s enough for me to surf the Net, upload pics, update my site and download UNLIMITED torrents *grin* Beside, the connection is FAR MORE STABLE than Streamyx (they didn’t get disconnected that easily or as often as Streamyx). This is base on my experience though, not sure about the other DIGI Broadband users though.. Looking forward for their 3G upgrade by end of next year.. *grin* *grin* *grin*

DG EDGE is too slow,go there people will laugh them only…and i don think they will get business, since other all are better then DG
my self using maxis…a lot complaint actualy… so far some place are still okie, I went to perlis town)( consider kampong already), i bring my modem and tested was okie, have UMTS mode… satisdy la~
once of my friend using celcom, complaint like hell
My opinion, celcom and maxis actually provide portable service… easy to carry any where… if slowmyx able to provide wireless too…i think business also can compete with maxis and celcom…

I am now a Celcom Broadband subscriber and a previous DiGi Broadband subscriber. I can say both the services are OK. Didn’t face any problem with them. Both Celcom and DiGi is providing 1 public IP address to share with all the subscribers when I connect to the Internet via Bluetooth using my mobile phone.
How about Maxis Wireless Broadband? Anyone can share? Can we easily get 1Mbps, 2Mbps or 3Mbps of download via HSDPA?
My mobile phone can detect P1 2.4GHz wireless signal when I around Sri Petaling though but why they choose to run it on 2.4GHz? Hmm…providing service using public frequency will be a headache. *INTERFERENCE* I definitely NOT subscribe with P1 until they have licensed frequency.
Btw, does iZZi Broadband covers Cyberjaya?

One of my friend from Kajang actually says Maxis Broadband is very good, not problem at all. But she uses it at home only, so not sure if the broadband is really portable,… I mean will she get any decent connection at all at other places.
DIGI EDGE is very slow. A friend of mine tested in Puchong area… not faster than dialup.
Celcom Broadband? No idea, not very popular among my friends.

I’m studying in UIA Gombak, a place between Pahang & Selangor and living on campus.
From my 1 year experience on using local broadband, I found that the data rate of Maxis Broadband was somehow GOOD, BUT it was VERY UNSTABLE. Plus, I’m required to agree the terms & conditions, which are 1. To subscribe for a minimum 18-months 2. The downloadable data for the remaining month will be narrowed to 3GB if the user downloads excessively. Some of Maxis packages are incompatible with many of the modems and datacards, which means we can only use the ones provided by Maxis vendor. As far as I know from Maxis, there is NO HSDPA IN KLCC AREA.
For Celcom Broadband, the data speed was OPTIMAL, BUT VERY STABLE even though I share it with 3 other friends. Since Celcom does not significantly separate the bandwidth of 3G and 3GX, some 3G users might get better performance, like me. Plus, Celcom’s SIM is a universal one, which means you can use it on most datacard and modem available on earth. I found a cheaper one at http://www.3gcard.myceloteh.com for only half of Celcom’s price. Celcom does not require 18-month contract like Maxis. You pay, then you can use. You stop paying, then they’ll stop your surfing. The advantage of Celcom is that they offer pay-per-use, daily, or monthly subscription. Celcom requires a maximum of 2 working days to activate your Celcom Broadband.

I’m Celcom Broadband D68 user. The speed is very good, and stable. I get Max Download 41KBps or equal to 328Kbps, and upload max upload speed of 10KBps or equal to 80Kbps. Sometime a little bit slow during the day, but not as slow like dial-up. Then I saw izzi more cheaper, the cheapest package is RM66 only for 1Mbps download speed. My first impression is WOW!, and planning to cancel my celcom then subscribe izzi. Yesterday, I went to PJ Digital Mall, saw izzi open booth at the entrance. So I give a try, I was disappointed with the speed. D/L less then 100Kbps. U/L, can’t wait for the test to finish, almost like dial-up. The promoter said the speed normally not like that, he also mention they still setting up their site, and maybe there are disruption on the signal. But I don’t want to take the risk since have to pay of 12 months subscription to register. can refund but not 100%. I’m still interested on izzi, does anyone staying at Shah Alam can confirm the speed?

Hi SaNji, I’m staying at section 8. Haven’t tried Maxis broadband yet, some forum say maxis better than celcom, but haven’t meet any maxis bb user in person to confirm this. I did try using my prepaid hotlink but cannot connect. Before my celcom D68, I’m using the celcom daily RM8/day. Its ok, but cannot afford for the whole month. the reason I choose celcom broadband becoz the usage is unlimited. i’m a heavy internet user, my minimum download is 10Gb/month. last time maxis limit their bandwidth transfer, now its unlimited. If you planning to go for maxis, let me know the results.

i see..my parents live in section 13.they dont want to use maxis bb bcoz they have been cheated by maxis once.actually both maxis n celcom do have fair usage policy.maxis is 3GB n celcom is 5GB.but it will b only when there’s congestion.i dont know.people tend to decide based on others opinion.since i have read lotsa negative feedbacks on maxis, i dont think i’ll sign up their 18-month contract.=P

if you using broadband at home only, better get streamyx.

I am staying in kl… pandan area… I’ve been using digi for a year now… so far ok… smooth… manage to DL without problem… of course cannot compare with 3g… but line are stable. However this week, I found the connection is very shaky… always dc… transfer rate less than 2kbps (can you imagine)… aarrgggghhh… last nite and tonite… are the worst… I have to refresh a few times before I manage to see the full content of the webpage. I’m very disappointed.

I agreed with Zaril. I just signed up with Digi Edge a week ago. Connection was stable and smooth with average 195kbps DL. I stayed in Bkt Sentosa Rawang and getting EDGE coverage. However for past 2 days, the connection is very intermittent with frequent RTO too when ping to their gateway. maybe Digi can brief with good reason on the situation.

Chai..check out the celcom’s 3G coverage map at http://www.myceloteh.com n find out whether ur area is covered or not.if its covered, check out the setting of ur phone or ur modem.most drivers will switch the connection to the most stable network, for example GPRS.we need to set the driver to connect to 3G or UMTS network only.but if the prob is still there, then it might b celcom’s fault.just terminate it whenever u want.

Hi,
Maybe I could share some info. I have never used Digi, so not sure the service. I used Celcom 3G and Maxis 3G and Maxis Broadband service. As my nature of work is has to be always connected, use 2 HSDPA hp (Dopod 838Pro & Nokia e51) and Maxis USB Modem to maintain connectivity even out of KL , in car, on train , as travel a lot whole Malaysia.
3G Coverage
Maxis and Celcom in general have quite the same 3G coverage. Some areas in KL Celcom have better HSDPA coverage. All main towns ( Kota Bahru, K.Terengganu, Kuantan, JB, Muar, B.Pahat, etc) now have 3G by both. 3G coverage is growing rapidly even in smaller towns from both operators.
HSDPA 3.5G COVERAGE
Klang Valley, JB, Penang & Perai for both. Maxis got HSDPA in Kulim, not sure abt Celcom.
CONNECTIVITY
Both got quite the same level of service. Most of time ok, sometimes very good, sometimes slow (especially Saturday night or holiday night). For 3G coverage , avg speed abt 110-350kbps, for HSDPA coverage , 500k-1Mbps. Sometimes can get abt 2+mbps.. but very seldom.
USAGE POLICY
Can consider quite heavy user but seldom download torrent. Both can download torrent but very slow la. for abt 700Mb file, 2-3 days.. he he. But so far never got problem with this issue.
PACKAGE & PRICES
Celcom did not package with modem. So u pay RM68 or RM98 monthly, and buy USB Modem (price not has dropped to RM700-800) or use 3G or HSDPA phone as modem. But if regular user on pc/laptop , better use usb modem. hp as modem ok for non frequent use la.
Maxis package with modem (usb RM138 monthly, ZTE Modem- bigger & bulkier RM98,RM78,RM68 monthly). usb better – more portable, easier, more reliable
sO, WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU USE?
Both operators have quite the same service. Most of time ok, sometimes not ok. Coverage also getting quite the same.
So, the difference is in package. Celcom dont have contract and buy your own modem/device. Maxis comes with modem & 18 mth contract.
IMHO
Conclusion, if got cash to spend abt RM1000 – 3000, go CELCOM. Buy the device or HSDPA phone.
If dont wanna spend cash for device, go MAXIS. All included. Pay monthly and contract for 18 months.
Hope this info helps.

i’ve been using digi broadband since nearly 2 years for now. currently i’m using my N93 paired with my laptop. the reason why i use digi broadband is because the unlimited internet is both for the phone and the laptop. so i can quick glance to opera mini / google map on the go and if i have more time i can use the laptop
browsing is crappy slow, might be slight faster than dail-up. downloading torrents takes days.
the reason im not upgrading is because i live in a *very* remote place – tanjung sepat banting.
im looking forward for any package with phone + unlimited 3G + broadband in a single sim card which is cheaper than curently RM 120 / month. but to think again, i dont think my area will have 3G in another 10 years.

I am constantly on the move, and changes my “geographical” location very often. That’s the main reason why I decided to sign up with Maxis’s Wireless Broadband.
When the connection for my Maxis Wireless Broadband drops to GPRS, it’s as good as dead.
Even when the device shows GPRS signal, there’s no connection at all.

hello everyone, im new here. just want to share my info and some experience of using celcom bb. just subscribe celcom bb d68, and just uses it for about 3 days up until now. the speed i can get is 460.8kbps, uses motorazr maxx v6, hsdpa phone as a modem. the speedtest on Penang server [D:276kbps, U:76kbps], Singapore server [D:256kbps U:94kbps], New York server [D:311kbps U:76kbps], Tokyo server [D:229kbps U:99kbps] and Sydney server [D:550kbps U:85kbps]. the print screens of speedtest was already uploaded, check them out here. from my just-3-days experience, the connection nearly stable and satisfies me until now, but sometime, i cannot surf, some im client [whether skype, ym, google talk] disconnected while torrent dlod still running. i really do not know the factor/s but i usually restart the connection to resolve that problems. thats all from me…tq for ur time

Celcom BB supersucks. I bought the Huawei E220 for $799 I’m paying $98 a month but where i live (in Sandakan) there is no HSDPA coverage. I only found this out when i went home & tested the service. I feel cheated coz why would they sell a service for so expensive when they know there is NO HSDPA coverage??? What the hell???? All i can i get is weak & measly 3G signal. Even when i can get full 3G signal, downloads are bullshittingly slow. Wanna torrent & surf at the same time? Forget it! Your pages will take forever to load. Worse, & i mean worse than dialup. I wonder what the hell is wrong with Malaysian companies. Its like u paid $98 for a delicious meal but instead only got a few grains or rice because your table is too far away for the waiter to deliver. Their so-called careline hasn’t come back to me after more than 2 weeks after my complaint. Who cares. I’m canceling.

if you are heavy download and normal use p2p such as bittorent, use the DSL (such as Streamyx). Mobile broadband whether Celcom or Maxis, block p2p most of the time.
In general, consumer have to understand that mobile broadband main function is to provide internet connectivity at most places. The speed is added value.
If your priority is speed and stability, wired broadband is still the best option.
Wireless internet based on UMTS/HSDPA technology suffers from limited bandwidth problem. This issue is not only in Malaysia but other developed countries also. But most of developed countries have very large backbones to multi support the bandwidth. Even our neighbour in Singapore, where most homes used 6Mbps, while the offices uses 10-15Mbps in normal (wired DSL technology)

April 28th, 2008 at 2:05 am
Same goes for me. Currently, I’m using Maxis broadband with the bulky ZTE Modem. I got the UMTS connection. Sometimes, it sucks. When i start downloading, even with the limit speed at download manager setting, i can’t use Firefox for browsing… i stay in UTM. Better go with Celcom.
Friend of mine using Celcom BB, seem like he is very happy with the service. But one problem, he got a message from the provider:
Dear customer, you have consistently exceeded the allocation of 5GB/mth. Please reduce your usage or risk having your speed controlled.
But he still can browse the internet. Only p2p (torrent) has stop downloading.

After I read through the comment from you guys and girls, I would like to share my opinion over here. In Malaysia our broadband services ” speed “are very depending on the various of location where the base they install and coverage can boost up to how far it is.
Malaysia broadband – will enjoy internet connection all day long but the speed will congest when more user log into same area, using the same base station, in the same time. It happen to wired and wireless broadband.
P2P, VIDEO, ONLINE GAMES it confirm will kill the speed for all the operator.
wired broadband – connected at home or wifi at home/office
wireless broadband – access internet everywhere
everybody know wifi, hotspot, wireless.
so what is wimax ? and new technology challenge wimax is iburst technology.
when come to wireless technology it will very depending on the network operator and provider.
we take mobile operator as a example. everybody understood some places your bar line are very strong, but when you reach certain area your talk might cut off or not clear. We call this blind spot.
our TV satelite program also same problem.
we can accept the intermittent of error, no connection, waiting reconnect back, stop watching drama for a second, and we also have to accept the internet intermittent congested.
many wireless operator have limited your usage for the month. but we do not know. WHY ? because we never read the term and conditions and sign up. and the promoter will never explain very clear because you didnt through the question to them. or they dont even know about it because it too technical.
Myself using streamyx at home, as long as not frequent d/c and sometime slow also acceptable.
Now I am working with IZZI product, izzi is a brand name. and what technology they using is call “iburst” . Japanese technology just like HONDA
myself staying at 12floor at segambut apartment, and BECAUSE we doing sales outside so we have demo set to use it and the speed up to 400-600k. During my driving I also run on youtube to watch movie, it still running smoonthly but come to certain area it will slow down and after we reach to next base station coverage area the speed jump up again.
M operator – confirm above 5th floor are not recommended to use. myself also tested at my places it was no comment added…………….
C & U – no comment / buy modem / 2year contract /
I just want to share with yours, if you interested I can arrange an appointment to your places test before you subscribe the services.
WHY pay before use ?
other operator – 12,18,24mth contract – still pay everymonth, if terminate still pay balance month and pay modem cost for certain operator practice.
OURS – min 6mth fees + activation fees – include subscription fees and modem belong to you. Reload your monthly subscription fees after 6 month no contract. More flexibility.
” THIS IS ONLY SERVICES WE CAN PROVIDE TO YOU without any charges FREE DEMO before subscribe. ”
“We need everybody happy on the surf and satisfy of the service before subscribe, it will reduces consumer complaints and refund cases”
