If you found yourself suddenly couldn’t send out emails from Outlook or any of your email clients today, don’t panic. Thanks to Tmnet for blocking port 25 for all out going emails.

What is ridiculous is Tmnet did this without any prior notice. I receive no notification from them other than lots of junk mails although I have been using Tmnet dial-up and Streamyx for so many years… My friend however did receive an email notification from them today. Yes, he received it today only when the block is in effect! If my friend didn’t forward the email he received from Tmnet, I would for sure have called up my web hosting company and started an argument. Lucky I didn’t do that and lucky my friend forwarded the notice from Tmnet to me!
Following is an excerpt from the email:
… many anti-spam organizations have blacklisted a large number of IP addresses from TM’s network. Due to this many customers have been unable to send emails from their mail server to companies who might be using database from the abovementioned anti-spam organizations.
These spamming activities by a small group have affected a large number of our customers, regardless of the nature of their Internet usage.
Therefore, TM is taking immediate action to address this issue. Effective 3 December 2007, TM will block OUTBOUND Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) traffic or port 25 for all out going e-mails from dynamic IP addresses. Only Outbound SMTP traffic from smtp.streamyx.com and smtp.tm.net.my will be allowed. …
With this implementation, we will not be able to send out emails if our dynamic IP address falls within the affected IP address range. We are thus forced to use Tmnet’s open relay server, at least until our web hosting provider configures an alternative SMTP port.
To use the open relay server, in Outlook, open up the Email account settings window. Change “Outgoing mail server (SMTP)” to smtp-proxy.tm.net.my.

Click on “More Settings”. Navigate to Outgoing Server. Uncheck “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”. Click OK, then Next, and then Finish.

Now, I am totally frustrated why would Tmnet take such a drastic measure in combating spam. Instead of blocking port 25 which is a standard SMTP port around the whole world, they should be more proactive in finding out who are the spammers and block their Streamyx account. I am not an expert in this area but I am sure there are ways to scan where are the spamming traffic coming from and trace to their usernames… and then make the spammers pay rather than make all Streamyx users suffer!
What do you have to say about this move by Tmnet? Is it a good move to combat spamming/spammers?
Now, if only there are more reliable broadband alternatives out there. What about Maxis broadband, iZZi, and perhaps Celcom?

Actually every company who provides free emails for us can read our emails…. Just depends whether they are responsible for their own job or not.
Seems like TMNET was too lazy to find out who was the spammer. May be they are lack of staff who working there?

As a consumer I think blocking port 25 sucks, but as a ISP, blocking port 25 is one of the EASIEST way to combat spam.
Most host offer an alternate port number (e.g. 587), ask your host for it. they usually have a solution for this problem.

TM Net has made it very very difficult for its customers. Especially in the business sector in Malaysia. The Government should have made sure that this didnt happen!

MY,
There are a host of things to check before we might be able to fix this problem. For example, does this problem only occur on your computer, or your email account? Do your colleagues have the same email problem?
Are you using Streamyx?
Are you emailing to Yahoo? Lately in Malaysia, we have a lot of problems sending to Yahoo email accounts simply because Yahoo has blacklisted a huge list of Malaysian IP addresses. Perhaps because Malaysians are too well known as spammers?!! The solution?… move out of Malaysia is one possible solution.
It’s still best to just ask your company’s IT people to help you as they are the most familiar with your company’s email accounts setup.

Hi all,
I am using Celcom Broadband, the data unlimited RM68 package. Over the past few months things are ok, but started last month, I cannot sent out email with my outlook2003, but receiving is ok. I am connecting to Jaring mail server for your info. The incoming mail server is mbox.jaring.my and the outgoing is smtp.jaring.my. so my problem is cannot sent out email, what is going on? could it be the ISP celcom is blocking? I tried connecting my same computer to a phone line and did a dial up to jaring 1511, connected and email sending out from outlook 2003 is ok. does this mean nothing wrong with my computer and software or firewall setting but just the ISP causing the problem? please advice…

victor..
Same problem wit me. My outlook2003 also had problem with sending but it works well when i’m switched to maxis broadband. When i’m highlighted this to celcom careline thru email..they ask me to provide everything regarding my laptop hardware specification (which not related at all – coz the problem suppose to be from server configuration). But i still give the info in order to receive further email from them. Suddenly celcom reply back and said they can’t identify my broadband subscription ( i am fake user??) and can’t proceed to entertain any longer my question. X-( Hell with that.. But somehow my younger brother knows some guy from celcom (not from sucks careline dept) and try to get the answer from him..i will do inform if i able to get the solution from him..
