Setting up a home network

I need a little help from you tech geeks! My friend showed me his network configurations. I don’t have physical access to his computer and modem because he’s staying in Nilai and I am in KL. But his network is something like the following.

Local area network

From my understanding, the 1394 Connection in Windows Network Connections should be a FireWire connection which can be ignored. He is actually connected to a Streamyx modem, using DHCP configurations.

His ipconfig shows the following.

Looks like he is using the default network range: 192.168.0.1. No default gateway.

I am not familiar with this setup. You have any idea what’s the “PPP adapter LanRoad” thingy? What IP is it holding 60.53.232.136?

Now, what he wants to do is to setup a small home network so that he can hook up more computers to the same network, and get on the Internet. He has bought a router to do that… a good move. But you have any idea how he can connect up all the pieces (the new router, the existing Streamyx modem, and his computers) to form a LAN which he can use to play network games? Of course the LAN needs to connect to the Internet via the modem.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

wow… Wayne put me in this position… I am just a novice only…

by the way, about the lanroad thingy, i never face before, after check, it is GIGABIT port… now a days all the NIC are come with gigabit function, which mean can up to 1000MBPS instead of 100MBPS only… is using Cat-6 cable

about the small network, the new router you bought must have a bit configure… you may go into the router look for “internet setup” and set the setting to DHCP, so that it can obtain IP from your Internet router…possible is 192.168.0.2

for the “network setup” part , you need to set the IP to 192.168.1.1 (gateway) and the IP may start from 192.168.1.2 (my example is start from 192.168.0.100)

well, on the PC part, it will automatic get IP and gateway from your new router, and remember to change all the workgroup to be same, normally is “workgroup” or “mshome” , same workgroup only can see each other file in the same network

about the 60.53.232.136 you obtain, try to check your internet IP, see whether is the same or not… i suspected is same… you may check it at http://www.icalvyn.com/ip

I am still not very clear… anyway, I will just advise my friend accordingly. It’s difficult to help him too because I can’t physically see his settings.

hi, sorry if i’m wrong about this, what i can see from your 1st picture is the lanroad is appear on dial up connection. i seem like a dial up modem connected to the pc.
and from the ipconfig i can see 2 set of ip address, the 192.168.0.1 is the router ip, the 60.53.232.136 is ip given to you by your ISP.
you can check with your friend is there any other devices conected to the pc? how he connected the modem ,router, and pc?
one more question is currently can his pc go to internet? if this pc can go to internet and the connection speed is ok, you can try a freeware call logmein, this freeware can act like symantec pc anyware, you can remotely log in to his pc to see what axactly what happen. can let me know any update on this..Good luck
