Joe, Bathory, Adam, please continue to log calls with Streamyx helpdesk. The more people that describe their problems, the louder TMNet management will hear your voices and be aware of the problems - especially if you are tech savvy.

I've just had another TMNet Technician here (6-JAN-09) and he was more helpful that the 1st (3-JAN-09), although still not the person I was hoping for. At least he was aware of things like attenuation and SNR Margin.

While he was here we noticed that at least one performance issue is related to the dynamic IP Address to get dished up. He seemed aware of this. The main check that TMNet team uses to gauge performance is:
a) Izzi Speedtest - nice use of competitors resources
b) ping www.yahoo.com -t
When I try ping to www.yahoo.com I get results like:
"Best" 240ms avg minimal packet loss, IP Address 118.x.x.x
"Medium" 320-380ms avg, maybe 1% packet loss, IP Address 60.x.x.x, 124.x.x.x
"Worst" 500+ms avg, maybe 30-40% packet loss.
This was around 12 noon, which is medium load I think on TMNet network, worst seems to be from mid/late afternoon and night.

I'm still attempting to follow up to get the underlying problem clarified and fixed.

Wow I'm glad i found this site. Well first some background info.

I'm a singaporean and travel alot. Currently shuffling between my/sg 2-3 times a week. My sg home connection is 3.5mbps (40++SGD/mth), sg office connection is 512kbps (512K!!!, and paying about 300SGD/mth, business line is more expensive)

My malaysia line is 1mbps and about 100+RM/mth.
I know there might be some people whos gonna shoot me for complaining but I feel, after reading all these posts, that I need to share my experiences of BROADBAND in different countries.

Please note that this is not a complaint against any malaysians or anyone, it is a complaint against the internet lines that is seriously a problem that needs to be fixed. If you do not agree, or wish to flame me, please stop reading. Thanks

Now let me tell you the difference.

First in singapore home - no problems whatsoever surfing any countries website (except some china sites) same for the sg office. Even at 512kbps (for the office), watching youtube or anyother sites for that matter still loads very very fast and no need to pause and download finish then play.

In malaysia, my line is 1mbps and wtf?? i cant download any file (wanted to download free antivirus and spyware files, 3-10mbs took me from morning till night and still not finished??) nice speed, 200-500bps/s and sometimes drop to 67bytes??? what a joke, even in Singapore 56kbps dialup (i used it, a free service provided by singnet for adsl customers, when singnet is doing maintanence, which is very rare) i can get about 20-30KBPS downloads and I can finish downloading a 4mb file within 10-20mins

Watching youtube for comedy clips gives me depression and stress instead. The clip plays for 0.5 seconds and pause for 5seconds. And continues for the whole clip. Wow, seriously. Even on the 512kbps line in my sg office i don't get this problem. 1mbps is supposed to be DOUBLE the speed, instead it TRIPLED my stress (which I am trying to relieve by watching comedy clips)

I don't, and i seriously emphasize this word, DON'T, get any problems similar to the ones I faced in Malaysia, in any other countries, which are supposed to be poorer than Malaysia, not to mention other countries which Malaysia is trying to catch up to.

Countries such as, china or even thailand doesn't give me stress from surfing, youtube or downloads. Not to mention australia, us, japan and others. Only surfing while in Malaysia do I get so many problems. I've never ever seen a download (from normal websites, not p2p or anything) reaching 100bps or even 1-2kbps. Even while on dialup the minimum was 4-5kbps wow.

Nice job, StreamyX.

P.S. If any ISP or resellers care to prove me wrong, I challenge you.

-If You can show me any service, wireless or wired that can CONSISTENTLY give downloads of 200KILOBYTES minimum (NOT UP TO, OR I'LL SHOVE SOMETHING UP TO YOUR ASS),

-NEVER drop connections,

-play youtube videos SMOOTHLY without waiting 1-2 hours to finish downloading a 10min clip only then i can watch it,

-a connection that gives FAST response when I surf websites OVERSEAS, NOT WAITING 20SECONDS TO START LOADING AND WAITING 1-3MINS TO FINISH LOADING.

-CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT SPEAKS ENGLISH, and actually KNOWS what they are talking and are EQUIPPED with the RIGHT SKILLS, not wayang skills!

I'll signup for as long as I am in Malaysia, which is gonna be a long time.

I'm glad I found this website.

Well Andy signing off, sorry if I offended anyone, except for the internet service provider.

To StreamyX People,

Thanks StreamyX! I love your GREAT "BROAD"band service! Oh how I love to OVERPAY for a 1mbps connection and get download speeds that is worse when I used to play BBS (1994) on a 9600baud modem. :) Thanks for letting me waste (clip time duration multipled by 15 or 60, depending on my luck) of my life to watch a (clip time duration) video clip on youtube. =) Thanks for showing me a blank white screen for 2-3mins everytime i check my email, or surf the internet. :D

Thanks for everything. I Love StreamyX,
Andy

I'm still trying to get to tech savvy Streamyx TMnet person ... there's definitely something wrong with their internal network around Bandar Utama (1 U west), hopefully just a matter of time before someone spots it ... faulty NIC or whatever. Interesting thing is a kilometre or so away a friend on Jaring has no issues (I heard Jaring backbone is TMnet ... anyone?)

... haven't managed to find or setup a local proxy server to get around my issues as yet... crossing my fingers that TMnet will come through.

Steven, glad you're getting some decent service.

OK. Since the topic still go on i give some opinion. I from KL but now i'm staying in Penang.
I found this PenangFon (RM60 for 2Mbps up/down) really fantastic. 1st, you don't need a phone line you don't even need a modem. What they do is pull a network (RJ45) cable right to your house and you just connect it to your network card/port.
Speed wise, i never complaint about it for website access. On-line gaming always good. Downloading movies/music always depends on seed/leecher but i can tell you i have experience that the speed shot up to like 1.5MB/s and contant for about an hour.
Now, about the down time. Since they only provide service to most apartment here so they will setup router near your place and if the hardware failure, you'll have downtime. I call them about it and normally they solve it the next day.
So, conclusion. As long as i stay in Penang and the service reach me i'll never switch to other ISP.
But if you need a mobile network then you need others like Celcom Broadband.
Just my opinions. Have a nice day all.

I agree. There's nothing we can do about it. I can really feel the difference once I came back from Australia for studies. Over there, there are numerous ISPs and it's hard to make a choice and tons of offers, and the speed is just incredible. My friend told me that Malaysia's broadband is now better, well I guess it's just the same. We'll need to wait for another decade maybe.
Sigh.

You know what guys, in the end of the day, we cannot choose something that is 'better' than the Tmnut Screamyx. That is all we have right now.
I'm tired of complaining. Boycotting does not make sense either as we still need the Screamyx to email and some important stuff.

Wireless broadbands from telcos have various speed of connections. Sometimes you must be in the right place to have 'full speed'. So ppl as far as Sabahans/Sarawakian you can move to Klang Valley now thank you very much.

I dont understand why the Gov is busy promoting the e-trade and all that stuff when the Internet here is so damn 'kasian'.

I wonder when the ISPs from outside are coming to Malaysia. Seems like forever.

gareth, I've tried b4... but am afraid to be so extremist...
have u ever heard a body name ISA...
man, that body sure give goosebumps to anyone that have been to that place... uhm... i wonder what malaysian govt think the democratic are... well, im fine with it actually, as long as i can live peacefully (xcept for the 1st wrld class infrstrctre but with the 3rd wrld salary)

btw, just to let u know... currently, im downloading a file size 5mb, to be specific a .pdf file.. it took me like 52 mins to download the file... i mean like, hellooo.. is this some kind of a joke.. no better than a dial up man...

well alex lee, the TM guys also have give me their call, ask me about the same things... sounds like the TM is very kind to ask us politely to choose either upgrading or stay with the present state speed.. however, they leave us no choice other than upgrading it or otherwise, the outcome would be like alex lee... uhm...
