Do you think I am crazy if I told you that you can get a brand new laptop at RM350 only? Yes, these laptops which cost no more than RM350 are new and not refurbished computers!
These are actually the long awaited US$100 (RM350) mini-computer from the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative. It is aimed at improving the quality of education in developing nations.

The laptop is named as the XO laptop, and is viewed as a learning tool created expressly for the world’s poorest children living in its most remote areas. The laptop was designed collaboratively by experts from the world’s cleverest and richest people.
The most intriguing feature of the new laptop is not the low price, though this is quite a feat, but that it won’t be reliant on conventional power sources. The final details of the dynamo-power feature are yet to be announced, but the makers say owners will be able to power it up by yanking a ripcord or winding a handle.
You can read more about the project at laptop.org.

Ivy,
I assume you know that you need to pay USD 399 to get the XO Laptop. It’s the price of two – one will go to a child in a developing country, while the other belongs to your child (or you). Secondly, that laptop isn’t available in any retail shop/mall. You need to participate in the Give One Get One programme to get the laptop. Internationals can join, but you must have a US/Canadian mailing address, which will forward your laptop to you. If you can meet all these, feel free to call 1-949-608-2865. I highly recommend you to read through the programme’s FAQ.
Regards.

Ivy,
Even at $150 I still could not aford to buy “the world’s cheapest laptop for my child (who’s really into computing), considering that we are in a third-world country. Here in the Philippines, laptop’s are the status symbol of society’s elites. I’m just wondering if it would be possible for my child (Vladimir, 4 yrs. old, kindergarten) to be the recipient of “the world’s cheapest laptop”? It’s such a shame if his early computer skills wouldn’t become developed just because he didn’t get enough access to use a computer to learn more. The only time he gets to use a computer is (when money permits) at internet rental cafes.
Please let me know how my child could qualify as a recepient of this laptop. I told him about it and his hopes just sprung really really up.
Thank you so much.
